I know this is an old post but, I was rolling this around my head today and got curious. I stumbled on to this and decided to post my top 5 or so favorite utility devices. A side from regular Slight of Hand some utility devices just make effects "better" and more "fair" than some sleights.
1. TT-this is the first thing I used to do a lot of magic with besides a deck of cards. 2. IET/IT-This is by far my favorite besides a TT to help me do some of the more impossible things that just about no SoH can do. IET bands are a must for anyone wanting to learn or do PK/Levitation stuff. 3. Svengali Deck/ID-These are by far one of my favorite decks, and even though you can do most of the effects with SoH, they can make them seem Impossible if used right. 4. Raven/Gecko-So much can be done with these even with just the holdout. 5. M5-Great things can be done with this PK device as I am sure some of you do not need to be told. =) 6. Psypher-this is one of my favorite devices to use for mentalism hands down. I tried to base my reply on devices that I felt were not just one trick pony's. So The Higher on the list the more versatile/unique the device. As I said before, I know this thread is an oldie but still a goodie. =) |

I have been rotating lately, especially since I recently attended the penguin live event. However, 1)TT as many have said. I literally always have one on me, sometimes two. Bill changes, salt, silk or cigarette vanishes always turn heads. 2)Generally, I never leave without IET bracelets. I won't mention the popular brand name as I now make my own. 3)ITR. I'm in the process of acquiring more so most of my jackets can be loaded. Mostly for card balances and floating bill. Sometimes, I perform the floating bill with the bracelet, then use the ITR when performing for someone else to shake up method ideas.
My other two favorites are not necessarily devices. 4) Scotch and soda with Kennedy half dollar and Mexican centavo. 5) Double Deception. Also literally has been in my jeans watch pocket since I've got it. Honorable mention, since it is a device, I usually have a small set of nail clippers. I use them mainly for clipping of the excess on my IET bracelets. Recently, I have found them invaluable to make a rounded corner for a short card from a borrowed deck. Providing I get the downtime to "doctor" the card. |
