I've mentioned my Crypto Stack a few times here and finally figured that I'd do a formal post about it.
Currently, I have a private subreddit setup that contains about 10 posts which contain about 95% of the work I've done on the stack. If any of you are interested in getting access to it you can either PM me here with your reddit username, or you can post it in this forum, or you can send a PM to me on reddit to /u/ascw or /r/cryptostack. As just an overview, the stack layout is here http://www.solve-et-coagula.com/CryptoStack.png . The stack works in a similar way to the Osterlind Breakthrough Card System, where the main feature is the ability to find out what card comes next in the stack. Personally, I've already memorized the stack and found that the math bits made it easier to quiz myself in my head than when I learned the Aronson stack. I'm not sure if the stack will have value to anyone else, but I wanted to get it in front of other people because I think that there might be some more interesting properties in the stack that I haven't found. I don't really intent to make any money off of this, but I don't really just want to make a PDF and make it public for the world at this point. Currently, there are about 15 members in the subreddit and although there always seems to be a handful of users, there hasn't really been any discussion in the threads or much feedback. Other features/pros are as follows:
As a side note, I'm not too interested in hearing any feedback about why a mathematical stack is a poor substitute for a memorized deck or turning this thread into a discussion about how how memorizing a stack is much easier than people think and they just have to do it. If you don't find value in this I am totally cool with that, but my hope is that someone will find value and that someone might be as inspired by the math aspect of this to continue to explore this concept along side me. |

Nlokers,
The BCS does not have a sequence of 10,10,J,J,J,Q,Q,Q,K I don't know where you got that information. |

Oops, it looks like my formatting got butchered and it won't let me edit it anymore, thanks for spotting that.
What I meant is that there are 3 spots in BCS where a similar pattern shows up. 1. J, J, Q (cards 8-11) 2. Q, Q, K (cards 30-32) 3. 10,10, J (cards 40-42) |

Those are exactly the kinds of patterns that show up in a real shuffled deck. Besides, you're leaving out all the other cards around those patterns such as the third 10.

From a strictly mathematical viewpoint, Richard is right, but it is well known that people are notoriously bad at assessing probabilistic models which are often counter-intuitive. Most people would associate "clumps" as by design rather than by chance.

Good observation, Claudio.

Staw man's argument. I stated a fact, nothing else. Once back home I'll be able to cite a few papers supporting it, if there's still some interest in this. Draw the conclusions you wish.

You guys just designed my newest mentalism routine. Spectator shuffles deck until they are satisfied, then they spread the deck out and I tell them to look for patterns which wouldn't exist if the deck had been shuffled. Brains fried!

Would be more likely brain dead.

What is this reddit nonsense? We have to go somewhere and sign up for an account? This is your mode of sharing? That is absurd.

Why not take this discussion to the Inner Thoughts forum where you can describe your stack, but keep it from the mere curious?
You are more likely to get some feedback. |

I'm not into Reddit either.

Oh look. An entrance to learn something new! Oh wait, magic snob and curmudgeon are exactly the same! There better be a prize for how much effort one doesn't commit! Yay!

Jed, scepticism or criticism towards social networking systems does not mean being a snob nowadays. Looks like you were making wrong assumptions.
I've been in contact with Nate for over a year now and we were discussing the properties of his stack - even though I don't use Reddit!

For a while I was sending stuff out to people, but it just became too much hassle to manage all those individual correspondences and keeping people up on new discoveries. I chose reddit because it allowed me to keep it private and also allow me to edit posts after they were made and allows for discussions that have a hierarchy, which I think makes it much nicer than a standard forum style.
After I feel like I'm done coming up with new content I"ll probably try to put it together in a PDF format, but until then it just works better for me to have it in one place. I will point out that having a reddit account is completely different than having a facebook account. With a reddit account all you do is make up a username and a password, you don't need an email address or put in your real name or anything, there is no verification, and no family members or people you went to elementary school are going to be finding you and trying to become your friend. |

Just make up a username and password without verification. Cool. Just like my Ashley ... I mean Dolly Madison account.
