Hi all,
After researching the web, my head hurts trying to figure out a way to make some non-totally horrible but not cutting edge tech videos to upload on youtube to share with you all. So, for those who know of such - I'm just trying to outfit myself to take some videos of some presentations of various things, mobile style to do on people in various places, and be able to also set up a nice pseudo-studio with the same equip (with maybe some augmentation) in my office to talk about the 'secret' stuff. Also, I use iMovie but the usual - or are there video editing and creating software you'd recommend? I really do want to get back to the Molding Meta project at last - plus show you the EVP routine I came up with .... and the mini-golem.... and more! I'm an Apple based person if that matters.... I was looking up and down the Café - seems the closest was FX in Grand Illusion - but this is not so grand! (Maybe the cost will be tho - I hope not!)

I would get a copy of Final Cut Pro for various beefed up features but make no mistake...iMovie is an awesome program.
I sometimes imagine what Charles Chaplin would have thought of iMovie...he would have been blown away. If you want to include charts and graphs or any other Motion graphic effect elements then I would also get a copy of Apple Motion. You will like both these programs Bruce! All kinds of fun new affordable portable led light boxes out there now. Your iPhone camera, a laptop, a beach lounge chair and a drink with a tiny umbrella. |

Adobe Premiere is the new standard for most TV stations. It integrates very smoothly with the other Adobe products. You can get it through Adobe Creative cloud for a monthly fee rather than buying it outright. It is not self explanatory but is no more difficult than Final Cut (also a great program). If you want something that is gonna walk you through it then you want iMovie. If you want something next level I would suggest premiere. If you or a spouse works in education you will get it for about half the normal price. With Creative Cloud you will always have access to the latest version of the program available. I have the complete package (every program Adobe makes) and I do not have a discount of any kind and it is only $50.. Single programs are much less.
I am running it with no problems at all on a... iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012) 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 MB (The Specter video was created 100% in Adobe After Effects. I would not recommend AE as a place to begin editing) |

I just got after effects, its absolutely incredible what y9u can do with it. The only downside, for me, is that its a VERY steep learning curve.

Thanks all!
Now how about hardware? Been watching the YouTube vids with comments ranging from iPhones to slrs mono pods, tripods, boom mikes etc As mentioned, want to go into areas and set up quick and easy as possible.... A home set up with maybe some extra bells maybe. - The effects I'll film etc I'll try to be doing in broad daylight but verisimilitude is never a bad thing.

Depends on the quality you want and how much you're willing to spend. In my opinion the skill of the person behind the camera is more important than the equipment itself. Just a thought.

Anything small I use a Go Pro Hero 3. If you are shooting a specific type of setting you can easily find something more specifically suited for it. You need it to shoot in HD , have decent storage or expandable storage, be somewhat easy to operate - especially with the process of transferring video. (Does it integrate with your other equipment?) Premiere or final cut can both easily take control of most cameras if you can plug it in. Make sure your computer is able to easily connect with the device. An iPhone is higher resolution that what you grew up watching on tv. If someone is watching your creation on a 60" TV with 1080 res - you need the quality of the video to be clean at that scale. if its something on you tube - a modern cell phone will do. In a nutshell - Easy to use and handle, interfaces with your editing equipment, offers a resolution that appears clean on your target viewers screen. You can always reduce something in size or clarity but you cannot accurately increase it.
