The Chinese government is currently implementing a nationwide electronic system, called the Social Credit System, attributing to each of its 1,3 billion citizens a score for his or her behavior. The system will be based on various criteria, ranging from financial credibility and criminal record to social media behavior. From 2020 onwards each adult citizen should, besides his identity card, have such a credit code.

There are some employers here in America who won't hire before doing a credit search on job applicant.
Also, try renting an apartment. I had my credit checked before I was able to sign the lease.

Some employers will do a Google search before hiring.

But in those cases you have the government as an independent third party in cases of disputes between you and the employer/landlord. In the case of China, who is the independent third part? There is none.

But we are all on a slow boat to China so we had better get our mind right now if we want a good rating when we arrive.
