Hello all...
My local library has recently got a 3D printer, so I have been playing with it. I modeled a Watch Winder noise maker and printed it out. If you have access to a 3D printer, you can print one out yourself. Check your library, they are popping up all over the place. You can download the zip file of the pieces here... http://www.randirain.com/work/clockWinder.zip There are two objects. The winder body and sprocket. Print the body standing straight up and the sprocket on the side, and you won't need supports. When printed, snap the sprocket into place and you are done. Enjoy. Randi |

Hey! I still have 3 English watch winders left! --And, NOBODY "winds" their watch anymore.
My best gag with a WW was: "Hey a MICKEY MOUSE WATCH! Mickey Mouse watches are fine, but, they look funny at six thirty!" High school audiences took two seconds to react. (Some of you may need to think about that, for a few more seconds.)

I use them when I do the hank mouse.
After I fold the mouse, I pretend to pull out a magic key and wind it up. You can also do the neck crack and all that stuff too. The best one, tell your friend that you do pet chiropractics. Then move the pets neck and make the noise. I think that's a Mac King gag. Randi |

You make it sound like it's "Some new fandangled contraption that is ruining magic".
It's not. Welcome to the future. Randi |

I didn't mean to imply that watch winders are totally obsolete!
Karrell Fox, about 30 years ago, printed up a list of about 25 things you could do with a WW. Karrell had a "funny" mind. I've used many of his WW ideas. However, I was born too soon! I can't imagine what one could do with a 3 dimensional paper watch winder.

Wow... Totally confused...
"I didn't mean to imply that watch winders are totally obsolete!" Are you talking to me? My last post was a reply to StevieDee and his comment, "3-D printing of magic gimmicks. And it begins..." It just sounded like an elderly person who probably still has a betamax and thinks every new thing is ruining magic. Maybe not, but that's what it sounded like. The truth is, watch winders are great gimmicks. Even though they are more like gags. I also modeled a snapper too. Randi |

No Randi, I meant that this issues in an entire new way of making gimmicks. I think it's great that you are on the forefront of this kind of thing, and within a few years I'm sure it will be the norm. It's an exciting manufacturing tool.

Sorry if I was misconstrued. And what's Betamax?

Oh my! Michael!~
I read through (most of) your link. Now, I'm SURE that I was born too soon! Thank you for helping this old geezer get "up to date"! I wonder what Todd Petrie, Merv Taylor, Floyd Thayer and Carl Owen would think?!?

This thread is beginning to remind me of why we should never ASS-U-ME.
I suppose if hairs must be split, props like watch winders are still gimmicks, but used typically to produce effects that are labeled as gags, rather than magic. (So, there... ) Regardless, this is a dang good solution to getting a usable item in the hands of many who could use it (even though the cheapo metal ones are still out there. I still have a few questions for Randi... 1) How is the sound? 2) If these were to be sold, how much would they be? 3) Do you notice advantages of plastic over metal? 3D printed Snapper is a good idea because you could design one that had more "character" than the simple ones. (I turned one from wood several years ago, for that very reason.)

Dick,
I think the old-time builders would love this new technology. Regardless of what they make and how they themselves do it, builders LOVE to marvel over new tools, like the men from "King of the Hill" love to stand around watching one of them work on a car. Yep.

Thank you Randi. Did you happen to notice how many grams of filament were required?
