Here's one I got wrong, and I'm kicking myself for not getting it right.
One number is three times the other. The sum of the numbers is eight more than twice the smaller number. What is the lowest possible value for the smaller number?

You'd think so, wouldn't you? I did. And I, like you, was wrong...

Ooh. Very tricky. Smaller number is -12! Other number is -4.

That's it, dbain! While the two numbers can be represented as x and 3x, the smaller valued number can be 3x.

I wonder about the word "smaller" in the initial problem. Is -12 really smaller than -4? It's lower, certainly, but smaller?

Yes, smaller numbers are less than larger numbers by definition: -12 < -4
