Years ago I saw a performer do a monte effect with a spike and three paper bags. He was blindfolded and he smashed 2 bags the one not smashed contained the upward spike. Does any one know where I could get this routine and or ideas on how to build this. I think it would be perfect for my act but cant find much info on this. Thanks for the help!

If my PM was of no help to you than this may be. There is an effect on Patrick Kuffs dvd "Mind Stunts" called Danger Monte. I'm sure others on this site can vouch for the helpfulness of the dvd and give you some more sources.

Just a note... Recently, the great Scott McLellan was seriously injured doing this act. Pay attention!

Too true, I have heard some wicked stories about this trick going badly, but that still doesn't stop me from being interested in trying it! I guess I'm just asking for it!

I believe that the trick you are talking about maybe the one by the British Magician Wayne Dobson called "Smash & Stab" although the better and more expensive version is "Deathtrap" from hocus-pocus.com I nearly purchased Deathtrap myself until I saw the Kuffs version, which is very visual but not examinable by spectators!

I've always wanted to do this effect, but I would totally hate the possibility of making a mistake.

If you make a mistake then it really does highlight the fact that it really is dangerous. So it does become much more than just a trick. However I don't think anyone would go out of there way to mess it up!

I perform Smash and Stab on a regular basis - it is definitely the safest version out there. Many magicians have been injured performing this type of effect - I heard Gary Kurtz injured himself quite badly once

Has anyone ever performed this and pretended to get the spike through the hand?
I think that could open up some possibilities into healing effects.. not for the fainthearted though....lol |

I have a freind who had an accident while performing this effect--he seriously cut his hand. He still performs the effect, only says that now it plays much stronger. Why? Because the audience can sense that he REALLY is afraid when he performs it. But that is taking method acting just a bit too far for my taste...

I have deathtrap, but I don't use it on a regular basis. Back in November, I was doing a gig for Harley Davidson, so I thought this would be perfect. So I brought it out and started rehearsing it. The night before the performace I was doing a dress rehersal with a small audience and deathtrap is my final effect. So I go for it and all goes well until...
Oh the drama. When I pulled the paper bag down, ripping the blade up through it, I held too closely to the center and my hand slid down the blade. Fortunately, the blade was not that sharp and I only required 8 stiches in my right index finger and 6 stiches in my right middle finger. Of course I am right handed and had to do close up the next night as well. Needless to say, I was shook up. The effect is perfectly safe, save for the event that I just described, but man was I sweating it the next night. On the up side, I got to play it up really big that it was actually a dangerous effect and I had the battle scars to prove it. I finally fear it so it plays a lot better. It's intense, I dig it, I may not perform it for a while, but it will come out again. My version is deathtrap from http://www.hocus-pocus.com oliver |

I am currently working on a version that will allow the performer to do a simple and undetectable switch of the spike for a gimmicked one and actually stab their hand onto the spike. Blood will run and the spike is visibly seen to go thought the hand.
I will also be including an alternate handling for a signed card on the spike when the last cup is lifted. A nice addition to an already cool effect. I will not be making many of these as they will be pricey. PM or email me at arlen@c-zone.net if interested. |
