A chance has appeared for me to work as a magician in Spain. Both in the mainland, and the "isles". It´s probably going to be in hotels, to entertain the guests. Anyhow, has anyone here worked in Spain under those circumstances? Any input will be appreciated!

Latin America is as close as I've got. However I liked Spain when I went. I'd say the Spanish have a slightly different sense of humor then the rest of us, but you'll find that out. Have fun, it's a beautiful place, just be aware that outside big cities and resorts, there may not be that much money involved.

Make sure you are dealing with reputable people before leaving Sweden.
Check out the contract thoroughly and make sure that everything is on the up and up. I am not trying to make you paranoic but it is wise for entertainers, especially young ones to exercise care before working overseas. Furthermore, Spain is a member of the European community. I don't believe Sweden is. There may be work permit issues to consider. You will probably be OK but I would be remiss if I did not advise you to take care. Do you speak Spanish or are you going to be working to the Brits that go on holiday there? If the latter is the case make sure they are sober. |

Actually we are, UNFORTUNATELY, because I was against it. this might be the one time I will benefit from it "Do you speak Spanish or are you going to be working to the Brits that go on holiday there? If the latter is the case make sure they are sober." I don´t speak Spanish, but my contact said you usually do well with English. Unsober Brits, well, they can´t be worse than Swedish tourists, can they? I´ve heard that the Swedes have a very bad reputation in the resorts, because of the drinking I never drink myself, though... Hello,
I did work in hotels in spain. make sure that you will have the conditions you need. I arrived at some hotel where they wanted that I performed in the middle of the hall with the stairs to the room in my back!! Anyway make sure that your stuff doesn't take too much space, backstage doesn't exist over there(in the hotels). Make sure also to keep your wallet, your keys and anything that has value with you on stage, some people over there knows that while you are on stage they have all the time to looks throught your belonging. Besides that go for it and have fun and beware to the sun burns. the sun can be pretty mean particularly for a swedish guy like you. |

Was just in Spain (Marbella, on the Costa del Sol) for a short run at a hotel there. I appeared in the early evening in between the kids' disco and some dancers doing a "Wild West" type dance show. The audience - guests at the hotel - seemed to be at least 90% British, with a few Irish and Germans. I did a show (in English, of course) which was mentalism (strong emphasis on comedy) and stage hypnosis. The children were much more interested in the show than the adults, so I oriented the mentalism part of the show to the kids, with some gags, then invited adults up on stage to be hypnotised. Luckily, my act was sufficiently unusual that I got interviewed on local English-language TV, for whom I perfomed some close-up mentalism and hypno-tricks effects.
The thing to do is to keep it light and as funny as possible. Unfortunately, the rates of pay for entertainers in Spanish resorts are rather low. But it can be a good opportunity to perfom in front of people who have *not* gone out of their way to see a magic show. You are likely to find that the kids will be your biggest fans, so it might be an idea to give them magic that they can relate to. |

Hi there.
It's hard to answer your question without knowing a lot more about you, but as a general rule, If you want to be a professional entertainer, and you aren't already, GO FOR IT!! You will learn more in the first two weeks of full time work than you would learn in a year of practice. It's a good point though to watch out for Drunken Brits. I don't think that any other nation goes out with the sole intention of getting Drunk and Violent like "We" do. It makes me ashamed to be British sometimes. A lot depends on what resort you are in and what time you are performing. Any way. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Andy

Mikael, if you are entertaining Brits in Spain they will NOT be sober, especially the Isles, unless you are entertaining pensioners. And yes, the Brits do have a worse reputation for drink in Spain.
Good luck! Paul. |
