I must admit, ever since I purchased Harlan's Card toon many years ago, I have slowly but surely developed a real infatuation for the little stick figure, and any efects that use him.
I have purchased many, and created a few of my own. The little guys have a certain basic, simple visual appeal. I love to draw them as well as use them in efects. And audiences seem to share the affection. Any body here created any effects with stick figures that you would like to talk about, or perhaps one that you have purchased that you really like especially well? Any fresh or undeveloped ideas concerning them that you find worthy of mention?

I enjoy a good StickMan presentation myself. However, when looking at cards there is only so much that one can do. Multiply, travel from card to card, or disappear. How about something where you draw a stickman on the card and then it levitates off the card. Or you draw a stickman on a card and place the card face up on a table. You play a game of hangman and when the game is done, you show your stickman matches. I have worked on both of these plots and feel that they may be untapped gold mines if worked out.

Doug, where is the stickman levitation?
The basic premise goes back to sympathetic magic and is a deep mine to explore.

Jonathan,
I purchased this effect through Hank Lee last year. The basic effect is this: You draw a simple stickman on the back of a card. Upon your command the stickman levitates. That's it in a nutshell.

There is a stickman trick in the vein of the Dan Harlan effect Cardtoon in David Harkey's book, Simply Harkey which is very good. I think you should look it up. andy

Sankey uses stick men a bunch. Off the top of my head, on his new dvd (22 Blows To The Head) he has a mentalism trick where a stickman is drawn on a piece of paper, and slipped inside a pay envelope, then four other blank pieces of paper are put inside their own respective pay envelopes. The envelopes are mixed, the spectator punches a hole through four of them, and miraculously misses injuring the stickman. It's pretty sweet. You might want to check it out.

Hi Daffydoug,
Is the stickman levitation practical for walkaround in terms of angles, quick reset, etc? Thanks, Tony |

In one issue of the Magic Menu by Jim Sisti, there is a stick-man effect where you show four red-backed cards and stick-men begin appearing and disappearing from the backs of the cards. I believe it was in Magic Menu year 2, but I could be wrong.
