I generally do not perform magic for lay audiences since I call myself a Metalist but if I had to, then I would do 4 coins across or sometimes one coin routine. For the last coin in the 4 coins across routine, I hand all 3 coins in my right hand to Spectator B and I pick up the last coin in my left and with my right hand and highlight it by saying whatever is appropriate in that situation and on the off beat I just place the coin back to my left hand(executing retention vanish) and take coins from Spec. B and add the 4th coin in the pile and hand it to Spec. A and wait a few beats and then continue what I have to do. One Coin Routine, I only do 2 or 3 vanishes and then I load the coin on my Spec. A(Watch or shoulder or any other place if available). Retention vanish is the first vanish in my one coin routine. As I said before, I use hand gestures a lot when I am talking especially my right hand, so I just put the coin in my left and talk a while and quiet down and focus on my left and "vanish" the coin. BTW, I squeeze my hand really hard so it makes cracking sounds; if my hand is dry enough, then because of finger is pressing base of my hand so hard it makes some weird noise and I like it very much since I have always disliked those who make "wheee~" sound with their mouth when they are doing something. I consider that distracting and I do not like high pitch whistling sound. I used to perform "if coin goes into my left hand then it becomes invisible and if it is in my right hand it is visible again" kind of one coin routine but I don't even bother these days. PS: I don't think there is need of justifications for transferring coins from side to side. Even though I force myself to justify most of things I do but I do not force others to do since it is not so necessary(Kind of like smokers telling others do not smoke) PPS:I do not know why but whenever I upload some videos of "unnecessarily over-practiced sleight of hand",as many people say, some people instantly assumes I do not perform for real people and say "Go out and perform for real people" without getting to know me I used to perform a lot even though I don't perform these days because I am studying for tests now. I basically got grounded. Zee |

Thanks for the insights. Never meant to imply you didn't perform live, just curious as to how envisioned an entire effect.
I seeing any sleight on a video I always ask, "what came before and what will follow." No, you never have to justify any action, but it should have a reason if magic is to be the result (opinion) You repeated the words "had to." I still do not understand why you have to do anything you do not wish to do or when you wish to do it. Remember Nate Leipzig -- "I am not an organ grinder monkey." It may be that today the audience thinks they can call the shots. Just curious.

Cannot abandon magic haha |

If the need comes from within it is good.

Can anyone name the third one and/or credit where it is taught?

He teaches many routines utilizing this retention vanish and goes into great details in this move. And he talks about what kind of coins to use too. But Takuma Wukawa does not teach how to get the coin into Curl Palm though |

I am so glad I caught this thread! Firstly, Ken, I applaud your coin and video handling skills - easily the most professional looking 'coin selfie' I've seen
Secondly, I hope you don't mind if I print up and keep this thread as a study aid. There are a LOT of nuggets to glean from this one |

Looked GREAT!
I really NEED to practice a retention vanish. I have seen Mickey Silver do this many times and he blows me away. - Mark |

Ken,
I know that this is an old topic, but considering that Mark "refreshed" it, I was just curious if you ever recorded a new version of your little routine after people's suggestions in here. If yes, I would be really curious to watch it. I've read some of your other posts, and I know that we got into magic around the same time (almost one year ago), and it is really nice to see other people sharing the same level of excitement with magic in this beginning stage that we're in. Best, Paulo |
