Modern Art is a great piece which can be performed almost anywhere. I have always gotten great reactions with it but as always, one must carefully think how to do it.
Modern Art is published in a book "Modern Art and other mysteries" and if you have the book, you have the rights and can build the piece yourself or have it built. There´s one builder who is authorised by Jim Steinmeyer and that's Owen Redwine. If you want the best MA you can get, go with his. It has features that the standard built ones don't have.

I have seen it performed live on several occasions, and I think the old Zig Zag is a better effect.
I saw the GOOD, "official" version of the prop presented by a seasoned performer. This was at a middle school, and I heard many comments afterwards. |

Anyone who buys the Steinmeyer book is authorized to build or have one built. At least, that is the way I interpreted the book. I did have Owen build me one and it is great. Always gets a great reaction. Actually, very surprising.

I have heard magicians say it's obvious but I didn't think so when I first saw it advertised. I've seen The Spencers present it a couple of times and I thought it got a great reaction each time. I didn't overhear anybody saying it was didn't fool them.

Modern Art is one of the most effective illusions I have ever seen, when performed as it was intended. I think the one-man versions and the ones where the magician causes the top to slide "magically, on its own" lose something in the process. The whole idea of the effect is to emphasize the knife and to pull the top across the knife, effectively cutting the assistant in half. When there is no pulling involved, it becomes more of a puzzle than magic, in my opinion.
On a related issue, I ran across a listing of illusion builers somewhere on the Internet the other day, and it said that Owen Redwine was out of business. Is this correct? Amos McCormick

Okay, my post was edited ... what was said (and I'll phrase it differently this time) was that I heard many comments ACCURATELY DESCRIBING THE GIMMICK! People were not terribly impressed with this properly presented illusion. I don't think this is a deceptive as we magicians like to think it may be.

I only added this illusion to our shows last year, and it gets huge reactions. As a lover of the old fashioned ZigZag and still polish mine up now and then, even though it is now only on display in our studio, I have to admit that being able to show the whole body while cut in half, standing up vertically, just floors them. Now my "gimmick" actually moves(both gimmicks) and very realistically! Im not sure maybe some models don't have this feature. But as long as you are not doing it 10 inches from them, and the gimmick(s) is made well and "Matches" then I don't see how it would ever be an issue.
Or maybe it's the flashing lights... P.

Flashing lights ...?
Of course, I can only comment on the presentation I saw (and ONE showing cannot justify a proper generalization), and the audience nailed the gimmick. But, I have talked to owners who said this is one of the easiest tricks for the assistant, easier to do than Zig Zag; almost works itself. True? |

Peter, who made yours? Did they also make the animated "gimmick?"
