Hello,
A few weeks ago I bought some small coke bottles and began to practice the coin in a bottle. I used to do the coin in the bottle so I already had the quarter and half dollar versions. After only a few runs, the bottom of the bottle broke with shards of glass falling on the floor. I tried this several times with the smaller coin and if I didn't break three bottles. These are small coke bottles and I wonder if they are particularly sensitive. I have never heard of ANYONE having this problem before, and I know I never have had this problem when I used to do the coin in bottle before. I use Johnson Precision Magic coins. Has this happened to anyone else? Stephen |

This hasn't happened to me but maybe it is how hard you are making the coin hit the bottom I only do a tap maybe that is why I never had a problem.

Yeah man, you don't have to kill the bottle to sell the effect. The effect isn't how hard you hit it. It's probably more impressive if you hit the bottle almost jokingly and the coin ends up in there. I use Ammar's Coin In Bottle for parlor situations and John Bannon's close up coin in bottle called Vacuum Packed. It's not how hard you do it, it's how well you present it. But I don't use coke bottles so I'm not sure what's going on, but I know that the bottoms of them are usually thick.

Somewhere on the Café is a topic about hitting the top of a bottle in such away that air is forced down into the bottle and the bottom is knocked out.

I've used a half dollar gaff and those 8 oz coke bottles for a few years now, and never had that happen. In fact, there's a very expensive trick for sale in which this occurs. It requires a special preparation of the bottle, something that would hardly happen by accident.
The idea of popping the bottom off was based on something I was told, but you needed to fill the bottle with water for it to work. In short, I dunno what happened to ya. Do clocks start up, or forks bend when you're around?

That's very strange. I have never heard of that happening before. Could be that you got hold of a bottle with a very thin bottom.

Maybe he got a batch of Coke bottles that were not tempered properly. I am told if you drop an item in an untempered bottle, the bottom will blow apart into shards.
This could be completely wrong since I have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to this, it is just something someone told me before. |

Thank you for the information folks. Those are good suggestions. I actually had this happen with several bottles (three). I think the bottles themselves may have been bad as they were small in size and not as thick as ones I remember from a few years ago.
As to force, initially I was putting it harder, but then I did it with barely any force and it still broke the bottle. Another factor was that all the breaks occured right above the bottom of the bottle. Very odd. I think the break occurred where the coin hit after the first shake. |

I use to do the coin in bottle with the old coke bottle and hit the coin so hard it flattened a Kennedy coin on the edge. The bottle was still in tacked. As a matter of fact, I saved a bottle just for that trick in case they stop making bottles.

I just bought one (Johnson) but haven't used it yet (you can see why this post caught my attention). I would suggest, however, that you try several different bottles and hopefully that will solve the problem. It will at least eliminate one possibility

I just happened to read the above and it brought back memories of something that happened years ago at Schuerest's Inn, Cincinnati.
A beer salesman that loved magic, was doing a demonstration of a half dollar that appeared within a beer bottle. He reached accross the table and picked up a 3/4 full bottle of beer, did his patter and then proceeded to cause the coin to "appear" within the bottle. You guessed right! The bottle broke and beer went all over the table and two customers. His main problem was that he was a little drunk! Tom Wolf
