Can anyone tell me if a Schell Doctor's bag stays open by itself? Couldn't seem to find any confirmation of that online.

I would guess from the design having the leather covered metal strips, that it should. Being these seem to be available only in vintage, it depends on how good the leather has survived over the year. Leather does no last forever without proper care.
I suggest you contact the seller, as they can answer this more readily, then on a magic website. I have gotten responses to my questions on eBay from sellers. Buying anything that is from the 1950's and earlier is always a huge chance. Doctors still made house calls back then, I remember our family doctor coming to our house with his little black bag. |

Hi Bill! Thanks for the info. I contacted the seller and he says it won't stay open but that's due to the leather being hard because it's been sitting since the 60's. He's not too knowledgeable about leather and I'm not sure if treating hard, old leather with some kind of leather milk will soften it up to the point where it'll stay open. Do you have any experience with that?

Chris,
Julian Mather has a bag like this. He has a simple length of aluminum bar stock that spans the width of the bag with a notch cut in each end that slips over the rim of the bag on each side. It holds the bag open and seems like a simple solution. Bruce |

Bruce, that is a great and simple tip. Thank you very much.

I got given a spray that re hydrates your leather by a guy that worked for a furniture shop. I used it on my doctors bag and it did the trick. I thought of making my bag stay open I thought of cutting wood dowel or metal then one day I put a sharpie there and it was the perfect size.
I did a quick google search and found this http://www.autogeek.net/lexsprayleat1.html. I have never used this stuff but it sounds simaulaur to theh unlabeled stuff I have. Hopw this helps good luck
Enjoy your magic,
