Hi all.
I have found a few pictures of illusions I've never seen before (and I'm familiar with the vast majority). One is called "Every Which Way" and is one I've never seen performed. Another is an apparent vertical sawing/slicing illusion (!). I found both of these images on a Yahoo group. This is the Every Which Way. http://highstrangeness.deviantart.com/ar......35538151 As you can see, the box vaguely resembles a zig-zag (or would, before the blades were shoved in, and the boxes slid apart), but it's very different in effect. I have no idea who makes it, though, and I've never seen any videos of it. It's just a mystery (heh) to me. And this, I am not sure if it's even real. If it is, then it is truly amazing. I just wish the image wern't so small... http://highstrangeness.deviantart.com/ar......35538469 Though I am not a magician (yet?), I thought if anyone knew, it would be the regulars of this board. So does anyone have any info on the Every Which Way, or that vertical cutting illusion? Incidentally, I saw that years ago, there was a post about the Every Which Way, but no one ever responded. It's been 11 years since that message, and I find it strange that this illusion isn't better known. -- Shane

The first on I have seen before but have no info on it.
The second one is an illusion being performed by Steve Chezaday, a member here. I believe it is his illusion. Blair

Really? After I read your response, I sort of thought he looked familiar in that pic. I just didn't connect it at the time. I've been lurking for awhile here, so I do know who he is.
Looking back at a post from 2005 on vertical sawings, I see he mentioned he did one, calling it "Any way you slice it". Perhaps that's the very one. I also saw that there are a few others who say they've done, or have such illusions. It's too bad there's not more video of these sorts of illusions on Youtube and elsewhere, as they seem to have a bigger psychological impact than the old standard sawing-a-lady-in-half. Regarding the "Every Which Way" illusion, it seems like has potential to be improved upon. I had this idle notion that if the box were narrower, and "woman-shaped", it would be more effective. Not sure if that's possible, since I don't know the method... but it would be intriguing. -- Shane

Regardless though, I doubt I could see his show unless he gets out to California. I really don't have the funds to do much traveling. I hadn't quite considered that some magicians might want to keep to some media to a minimum for that reason, although I did speak with Thomas Moore, about his 'Cascade' illusion. It is a remarkable illusion, and is easier to show than describe -- http://www.thomasmoorecreative.com/site/......-cascade I forgot where I first saw those images, but I was intrigued, and emailed him asking him if had any video of the illusion in action. He said he's reluctant to do that now, as he once had videos of his previous designs, and they were very quickly ripped off by unscrupulous builders. It's unfortunate, as that illusion looks incredible. It reminds me somewhat of Frederick Clement's Rainbow Lady, though, but seems even more deceptive, given the size of the divided boxes.

Thanks for looking out for me boys ... yes, the Vertical Sawing is my baby. I designed, built and painted the prop from scratch. There's only one and I'm very proud of my work. I'm not sure what Shane is after, but he contacted me directly.
We'll see where this goes ... Steve |

I guess I've caused some offense here, and I really do not understand why.
Let me make a statement, though. All I really wanted to know was a bit more about those two illusions, and who makes or performs them. That was it. Somehow this got construed into accusations some kind of entitlement on my part, in an angry email exchange. Nowhere did I ever ask *how* they were done. I just thought they were interesting and wanted to a bit more about where they came from. I truly didn't mean to cause offense, and I am completely baffled with the response I got in my email. Is it really that big of a deal to ask where illusions originate? I just don't get it. Have I somehow breached etiquette here without knowing?

Crotalidae75,
Don't worry about it. Not everyone here is nasty and most are here to help. Don't let the "nasty few" discourage you from posting on the Café. Welcome,

Thanks, Ihop. I suppose my worry that these forums were hostile to beginners was misfounded.
Meanwhile, I'll agree with Bill, and will refrain from making commentary on illusions, as I am not a magician (yet, anyway). I'm a photographer. As Bill is not a photographer, as far as I know, I must request he also refrain from making any comment on my photography. After all, what the hell does he know?

75, I was interested in illusions for probably thirty years before the Café arrived, having built more than a dozen of them for myself, or others, or just "to see if I could". Regardless, when I first arrived at the Café, there were some who saw my post count and assumed that I was fishing for secrets.
I see no signs that you are "fishing", but only offering your opinions. Actually, I think we, as magicians, would be well-served to pay a lot more attention to non-magicians' opinions. After all, they are generally the ones we are trying to entertain.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Thanks, Clinton. I appreciate it.
It occurred to me, that the attitude of magicians ignoring non-magician's input might be like a professional photographer ignoring his or her client's input. In other words, it's probably not so helpful. And, if I wanted to fish, I'd go find a lake or river...
