Look great --- do have pix of us looking a gimmick yet??? Very different. What does the crank do in the effect???

I'm waiting for the clothes to come in to decorate the gimmick, but it is set up in the illusion, ready to go. 10-15 minutes is all I'll need for that.
The greatest thing about the crank, is that not only does it lift up the top portion with the twister attached, allowing me easier access to get in, but also the eerie clicking sound it makes to raise and lower the top. I also have about 1 hours worth of touch up. The top section/box, lifts up off of the lower box. I counter sunk some 1/2 inch metal rods into the lower section, so that they are sticking up about 3/4 of an inch on 4 sides. My clothes will be in next Friday. I ordered a used tux shirt and vest. |

Did you use the regular mirror or the flexiglass mirror? I am looking for a place to buy the "Unbreakable mirror" with different sizes, can someone point me to place please?

Interstate Plastics is who I bought mine from. Once you go into their site, just search mirror. They have 2 thicknesses.
My illusion is completely finished and works great and looks great. The only reason I have not posted pictures of the finished illusion, is because (I) have yet to dress up. It sits in my workshop which does have air conditioning but I seldom turn it on. I possibly might have a Halloween magic show to debut it at. |

Great! Thank wizardpa. I live in Southern CA too, let me see if they have a store I can come in to pick and choose.

Yea! I get to debut my Twister Illusion this Saturday. Looks Great and works great. This will be a perfect show for it. It will be on a stage at a Country Club for a Father Daughter dance. I'll be doing the Daggers through head on her, and The Guillorine, and she will get her revenge on me with The Twister Illusion.
I hope to get some good video and Pictures. The client wanted an Illusion show. There will be 300 people in attendence. |

Well things did not go as I hoped/planned. I was told by the client, that the show would have over 150 girls from the age of 10-16 at the dance/ball. I was also told that I would have a large enough stage to present a large illusion.
I arrived well before my shows scheduled start time, to set everything up. The very first thing I noticed was the stage was not big enough for me to do The Twister on the stage. I would have to set it up to the side, off of ths stage, and then pushed into position in front of the stage. That would be no problem since it is on wheels. Next, both my assistant/Grand-daughter and I noticed, that, as the guests arrived, 95% of the girls were under the age of 10. I still did not think there would be a problem, because there were large tables set up in front of, and around the room, which was very large. The biggest surprise was yet to come. Even though the girls had very pretty ball gowns on, as the shows start time got closer, they sat 2-3 feet away from the stage, and on the floor. As best as I could, I could not get them to back up any more then a couple of feet. The show went well, and everything seemed to me to go well, and the audience let me know after the show, that they loved the show, I knew that it could have been much, much, better. I now know how sardines feel as they are placed in the can. |

Consider that a common occurrence. Very often, conditions are much different than expected, even when assured they were as you believed them to be. I have encountered some real doozies. Once I was booked for a Christmas party at a bowling alley and found out that the show was to take place in the locker room. OK, not the worst scenario I suppose, until I discovered that all the benches were bolted to the floor, including in the performance area. They hardly allowed enough room for my tables and they created the most amazing obstacle course during the show.
But, the best was when I was to perform at a restaurant banquet. I was to do my full bird act, including the production of a huge white duck. (This was before animals in restaurants was much of an issue.) Upon arriving, I was informed that the banquet hall that was to be used had some issue (leaking roof or something... I don't recall). They moved this particular party to another room, which happened to be a train car! Being much smaller, it was packed (over-packed) with people and tables... and with one very narrow aisle down the center, I had to load in my stuff, because they wanted me to perform at THE FAR END!!! Lots of props, sound system, plus travel cages of birds.. including a duck who was audibly agitated by the close proximity to so many loud, talkative people... all being carried over the heads of the people. If you've ever been on a train or plane and some idiot is maneuvering a couple of huge bags into the overhead bins, this was me x 20. You did the best you could and that's good enough!

I love reading your posts Michael, knowing that you have so much more experience then me.
In matter of fact, reading your latest one, I wonder if you have any help carrying all of your stuff from your vehicle to the area where you are performing, and then back again to your vehicle? I'm a prop guy. I know there are a lot of magicans that think I'm crazy for carrying so much stuff to a show. I would have it no other way though. My 14 year old Grand-daughter has been my assistant since she was 6, and she is a big help carrying stuff and helping me set up. She could even set up my entire show by herself. If I'm doing a kids show, which most are, I'll even bring some of my other Grand-daughters with me who are also great help in carrying stuff and setting up. |

Michael's right -- it happens. Many years ago I did my cards and birds at a huge mall. They built a small stage to my specs, and I asked them to place stanchions about three feet in front of it, which they also did. And there was a security guard right there. I thought I had it nailed. So what happened? All the kids in the audience came up front, sat on the floor, and began to migrate under the barrier until they were right in front of the stage. All I could do was take advantage of it and look and smile at them (it was a silent act) now and then.
That's where you learn showmanship on the fly, I guess.

Being a worker means being fluid. You'll never make it if you are not able to go with the flow.
Chris, I rarely book shows these days... by choice. But for those that I do, either I carry all my stuff in or graciously accept any offers of help. Any shows that require illusions are generally going to have others involved, so assistance is usually available.

A nice looking prop Wizardpa. I love the rustic/brick feel to it. Also well done for adapting. Many years ago, still being an obnoxious teenager, I once did a show at a library. They told me it's a stage show and I prepared for that. Got there and it was basically a close-up setting with a circle as a stage. Big lesson in being prepared for anything.

I was so hoping to get a good video of my performance of it. Of the 3 large Illusions I have, The Temple of Benares, the Zig Zag, and the Twister, it is the hardest for my to transport, so a lot of work went into bringing it to the show.
Oh well, next time I get a chance to bring it to a show, I'm going to make sure there is a TRUE STAGE. |
