Has anyone tried to construct the mason jar gimmick for the Passe Coins and Glass as described in Dan Harlan's rendition of Tarbell #23?
I am interested in trying this, but Dan gave virtually no details on the construction of the gimmick, and I'm not sure how to get access to the tools, or if there are some easier ways to do it. You can PM me if you think your response would be too detailed for an open forum. Thanks; John

Hey John,
I've made the gimmick. I can send you some pictures of it next week when I get back to my house. You won't need any tools besides sandpaper really. The rest is constructed with tape and magnets. These are the magnets I used. http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D301 I find that about 3 of them arranged in a triangle give the proper amount of hold for a dollar sized washer. You really should put in the time to build this effect. It's a show stopper and I get great reactions every time. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. |

Thanks Bob. I will wait for your pictures (my email is listed in my profile).
I agree that it looks like a very nice effect. I will go out and buy some mason jars! John

If you get a Rotary Tool, it will save you a lot of time (instead of sanding or filing):
http://www.toolbarn.com/blackdecker-rtx-......od14gM9Q You'll also want Grinding Bits like these: http://www.toolsmithdirect.com/3-pc-grin......ols.html I have made one change since putting the routine on video. I no longer "add-on" the special lid. Instead, I have one COMPLETE assembly which I simply switch-in after the initial lid has been "examined." It's faster and quieter that way. As I'm sure bobandjim would tell you, it's really pretty easy to make and well worth it. Have fun! --Harlan |

After re-looking at the instructions, I agree that it is not a complicated thing to make the gimmick.

I'm considering a new twist on the plot for this effect.
While looking for some stickers to use, I came across stickers that look like coins: American coins: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004K4C......KIKX0DER and "Bitcoins" http://www.cafepress.com/+bitcoin+bumper......stickers With the bitcoins, I could give some pseudo scientific explanation about how we pay for products with these ephemeral coins. I'm not sure if this adds to the effect, but it does give more interesting looking "coins" to use.
