Well let me just say this is a superb collection of the professors most reguarded magic tricks.
It covers a wide variety of magic like.... The Cups & Balls, The Linking Rings, Six Card Repeat, Dai Vernons Double Lift, and so much more. Packed with the professors philosophy's written by Lewis Ganson. Picture illustrations by Dai Vernon. I give this book ****.

This is a 'creme de la creme' desert island magic book. My copy is falling apart from overuse through the years, but I wouldn't trade it in for nuthin'. This book is a gold mine you can return to time and time again. Some of the effects (The Vernon Poker Demonstration, The Last Trick of Dr. Jacob Daley, Nate Leipzig's Card Stab, Dai Vernon's Double-Lift, The Challenge) are classic worth-the-price-alone material. And the essay "The Vernon Touch" should be read by every magician. I rate this book right up there on the must-own level with Stars Of Magic and Expert At The Card Table.

You can't be serious that only two of us own this awesome book. Oh well, your loss.

With a deck of cards, some coins, a handkerchief and a few other sundry items you can make a living with the information contained in this book.
This is my pick for the one book that I would not want to be without. I've read and studied this book for some 40 years, and I never get tired of it. A true Classic. Take care. Vincent |

I've got this book, and I've been intending to go through it more carefully. A lot of the material I've already learned from other places, but it is a good collection, nonetheless.

The second chapter, "The Vernon Touch", is worth the price of the book. Fortunately, you get another 22 chapters of The Professor's brilliant magic.
A Chinese Classic - Every time I perform seated. Penetration of Thought - Just rediscovered this one. Did it for years and then let it slide out of the repertoire (SP). Three Ball transposition - Friend of mine used this in his TAOM award winning routine a few years ago. Application of the Tenkai Palm - Thought this was a pipe dream until I saw Bob White do it. The Linking Rings - no comment necessary. Seven Card Monte - a hidden gem. Quick Tricks - Expansion of Texture - Every close up show. The Challenge - Didn't impress me the first time, but I'll go take another look. Dai Vernon's Double Lift - impeccable. The Cups and Balls - Charlie Miller thought it was the best routine ever. Nate Leipzig's Card Stab - Tips on Knots - Six Card Repeat - Saw hip do this once. Fooled the Hell out of me. Free and Unlimited Coinage of Silver - Wish I has the guts to do this one. Mental Spell - A stunner. Pot Pourri - Don't read these, I don't want anyone else to know about them Ball, Cone and Handkerchief The Last Trick of Dr. Daley - Has any trick inspired more handling variations? Paul Rosini's Impromptu Thimble Routin. The Vernon Poker Demonstration - again needs no comment. The Thumb Tie - A great Parlor/Stage Routine. One of the three books that, in my opinion, contains no bad tricks. Van

Hey van,
What are the other two books you hold in such high esteem? Just out of curiosity... |

Now that's more like it!
Hi van, it's amazing the wonderful things we can learn from the great masters of the past, thanks to books and videos, and of course DVDs. Sounds like all of you really enjoy this book as much as I do. P.S. You all have great taste in magic. (((POOF)))

Van, you're right. Stars of Magic and The Dai Vernon Book of Magic are both brilliant.

Van,
Isn't "Holding On" (from Secrets of a Puerto Rican Gambler) just a kick in the head? The final ending is sooo unexpected--it just seems to come out of left field, beans you in the head and drops you to your knees. (And that's AFTER the chosen card has been revealed in a very surprising and unexpected manner.) I agree with your choices of Stars of Magic and the Vernon book, but I'm still thinking about the Secrets of a Puerto Rican Gambler. The main thing that might keep me from including "Secrets..." in with Stars of Magic and the Vernon book is the fact that the NUMBER of effects in "Secrets..." is not nearly as extensive as the number of effects in the other two books. I'd almost categorize "Secrets..." as a booklet. Mike
