I don't perform "grand illusions" which is probably why i dont know much about them =)
however, i do find some of it fascinating. my personal favorite illusionist is David Copperfield. he stays away from the cheese and the corn and worries more about making good magic than producing a bigger airplane than the next guy. in short, copperfield is always fun to watch and never fails to give you that feeling of "Wow" during his shows. for a lot of his stuff you can try to figure out how its done and come up with some pretty good guesses. things like, "well that gizmo on stage must do this and that etc." however, I must admit that for some of his vanishes and appearances i am completely baffled. my guesses get only as far as, "Well, his assistant clearly went somewhere..." or "well, he obviously appeared from somewhere somehow..." a few examples: Voyeur and the platform vanish from Tornado of Fire. The elevator appearance. his really cool metamorphosis effects walking through the great wall of china etc. Anyways, I get the feeling that pretty much all stage vanishes/appearances, whether people or animals or whatever, usually use the same basic principles. all that changes is the presentation and the atmosphere of the trick. so here is my question: do any of you know some good books that talk about the principles of stage vanishes and appearances? thanks! Magicmanr, I definitely agree!! Portal is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. The vanish was so perfect. I've got a slight idea on the method, but I'm sure I'm way off. I talked to him afterward, and all he would say was "It's based on an old principle." Hats off to David for this one.
