In the last episode of P&T (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DHnMcerAD4 , from 1:00), a magician called Bill Cook seemed to have copied a previous act from Wayne Dobson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPX37l1vNWM).
Even Penn or Teller did not seem to remark this. They were positively surprised by the hand display subtelty, which is not new. I find this strange / dishonest to go perform for P&T with the act from someone else.

It wasn't stolen. It's an effect that is available for sale.

Bill Cook is a really nice guy and is one of the biggest supporters of magic. He has studied under the biggest names in magic and has been there to help countless magicians when they have needed help. Now, regardless if he is a nice guy or whatnot no one should take something that belongs to someone else. The routine that Bill did last night is an effect by Wayne Dobson that he originally performed on TV and later on taught on his Unclamped DVD which at the moment is no longer available. Hope that helps clear things up. Here's Bill's great performance from last night! -Kyle

It is a great effect. I bought it years ago. Bill Cook has IMPROVED the handling.

Also, in general, I've heard several people complain about "Act Stealing" in this show...but in the two previous cases I'd heard this charge made, both performers were doing the tricks with permission of those who originated them.
Also, magicinsight, for some, yes, it might be about TV exposure. Though the name of the show is "Fool Us"... |

Most of the effects performed on the show , past and cuurent, including the invisible card and David Ragals card effects did not fool me and certainly not Penn and Teller. You cannot expect to fool Penn and Teller, or any magician, with the Hindu Thread routine or any other commercially available effect. Some may structure their routines to fool them, but mist want and do get TV exposure which is good for business. Nothing wrong with that. It is still a fun show to watch.

We know Bill and the Dobson routine is different in method but the effect looks the same. Can't go into too much detail here as THAT would expose it. Just know he is aware and they do differ under the hood.

Apparently Barbara (the spectator on Fool Us) had seen the Wayne Dobson video since she picked the seven of hearts as well! At some point it becomes a guessing game as to which method was used. There are multiple ways that someone could do this routine where the spectator freely names any card, it doesn't have to get whittled down to a specific suit. It didn't happen in this act, but several times now, if their initial guess is wrong but they think they know what is going on, the word games go out the window. I think that when this happens, it shouldn't be shown. |

I spoke to Bill about this at Magic Live as I independently created the exact same idea several years ago using the Q gimmick from Cosmo Solano. My performance of the routine can still be seen on the Q website, predating Bill by several years. I did not know of Wayne's version, and after speaking to Bill, he did not either. He was very gracious and apologized to me (although not necessary) and then made it his mission to speak to Wayne. Bill is a great guy and has made sure everything is okay with me and with Wayne.

I used to do this with the Kennedy Mystery Box when it first came out, but I had an In**x that was big and in a briefcase. Cosmos Q has made it a lot easier.
