I'm relatively new to coins, and was recently inspired to learn the Goshman pinch for Copper Coin Conundrum by Francis Menotti. I put together a little coin in pen cap to see how it looks. I mumble something about the strike vanish, but this is obviously not the Williamson move. It flashes a little, and I'm not convinced it looks good, but I am seeking input from those wiser than I (that's a pretty big list of people). Be gentle.

Looks like you're getting into Tenkai and back pretty good. And pretty quick too!

Hi Craig, Welcome here...
I think you'll be doing this really well as you keep playing with it. The Pinch allows you to show your hand empty (for a moment!) and is a wonderful move...I use it all the time myself in some deceptive ways while mixing it with other moves. Comfortably getting in and out of it allows you to do some really nice things. Mixing in other elements of magic will open other doors to you. The Goshman Pinch (I believe more accurately, the "Tenkai Pinch") is well worth mastering, and you seem to be on your way with it. Keep Moving Forward! (KMF!), you're going the right way. Good journey.

Don't think you need to emulate the strike vanish, this is not a sequence to fool magicians, and many wouldn't know of that move anyway. I think you should just wave the pen around the hand, or tap it in an elegant manner. It would look prettier.

Thank you all so much for the advice and kind words.
I agree the vanish could be prettier, and I've thought of simply touching the marker to the hole in the side of the closed fist so the coin can "hurry into the cap." @Vinny, I would like to learn more about Jessie Di Comellio and his work as I am unfamiliar.

I don't think the Goshman pinch is a move that works well when the hands are being "burnt" by the specs, I mean I don't think you can hold a coin, then do the pinch and show it gone! it just wouldn't work.
The pinch should be used as a way to hide a coin while holding and displaying a different coinobject. The reason for that is that the pinky is held in an unnatural way that can only be forgiven when holding another object, and not when trying to show an empty hand. |

The eyes are on the coin in the other hand. Also, with a Schneider Drop Vanish where the coin is "seen" falling into the left hand, the ability to flash the right hand empty is a valuable enforcer. Jay Sankey has some nice use of this Pinch as a "in transit" move on his "Sankey's Best Coin Magic" Certainly, the effect from should never be, "look at my hand -- gone!"' Since it is easy to go from Vinny's Crimp to the Pinch -- this issue will be part of the upcoming book(s) and the Crimp Advantage.

People always "burn" my hands, I'm used to it as unbeknownst to them they gain no advantage by it and it aids in making the eventual magic seem even more impossible - I love it! And it is a simple-enough effort to traffic their focus elsewhere as I go into the move…little effort, if that and many times as they are looking directly at my hands. As I mentioned above(?), the move is one better used momentarily, as a quick proof that the hand is empty. It is also best used on the off-beat (even in conjunction with other moves) but can be used to produce a coin where the coin is not visible to begin with, like maybe behind a Flying Shuttle Pass as I often do, or perhaps all the stuff I illustrated in my 10 Switch, right before their very eyes. I use this move practically everyday in a variety of ways and effects, and the quick deception has proven to be pretty much imperceptible, to the point that I don't know what I would've ever done without it, especially to the great extent that I came to use it to do my bidding. I'm just sayin'.

Tenkai directly from a crimp palm? That sounds very interesting.

Hey Marion thanks for your reply,
What I meant was, as funsway understood from my post, that the pinch shouldn't be used as a direct "now you see it, now you don't" vanish. I myself also use the pinch whenever I'm doing a coins across routine, it's an excellent move, but there always have to be another "object" they gotta watch beside the empty (pinching) hand. usually I'll use it as the first move in a coins across, so you got your open, seemingly empty hand (pinching), but also the other hand is in view, closing tight on the coins, and the latter is the one taking most of the attention. And While we're at it, have you seen this way of getting into the pinch without using the thumb? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brvL90nn348 Looks really good on camera, I used to practice this sequence quite a bit (it's not me in the video), but never found a situation where this difficult vanish would work better than other, simpler, vanishes. |

Hey daniel, that's pretty nice handling using the move.
I do some similar stuff, and I do understand your points above and hope you understand mine. Again, I basically agree, that the Pinch is probably best not shown as a "now you see it now you don't" thing…Just as an ROV shouldn't be shown much like that. But within routine, and the momentary use of the move, it can work rather well with little misdirections here & there.
