I have a curiosity which is a set of early coin boxes that I suspect were made by Paul Fox. If they were not made by him then they might possibly have been made by Connie Haden. There is enough circumstantial evidence to lead me to the first conclusion, but I am hoping that someone here can confirm that, besides the beautiful cups and balls set that he made, he also made other brass items including coin boxes. The research I have done thus far is thus: Paul Fox did turn brass cups which is common knowledge. The original instructions I received with this set of boxes calls it "Milton Kort's routine for the Okito Box and Paul Fox Coin Cups". The first edition of Modern Coin Magic introduces the Paul Fox Coin Boxes as "Still another variation are these unique boxes by Paul Fox". The set is an Okorto set, but a set by that name was not present in the first edition of Modern Coin Magic, it was in the new, enlarged edition from 1966 and manufacture in 19666 was attributed to Connie Haden. There is a machined, 1957 Franklin Half in the Boston Box that appears to be original.
I am led to believe that the set that I have is from the late 50s, and was made before the set was called Okorto. The wording from Modern Coin Magic (1st ed.) said "unique boxes BY Paul Fox" which means he came up with the idea for the set and/or made them as well. The original Paul Fox Coin Boxes/Cups (called boxes in Modern Coin Magic, called Coin Cups in the original instructions) were size for 7 quarters and consisted of two boxes, a regular bottom and a recessed bottom. At some point between c1952 and c1960 the boxes were made in half dollar size, a Franklin Half (with the reverse milled away to create a thin head only coin) was included, and a thick wall box was added. If anyone has information that can clarify this curious early Okorto set it would be greatly appreciated |
