Hi guys,
I am a family magician, I have a kids show and grown ups magic to suit all ages. One of the biggest struggles I have is really bringing the audience out of their shells. Some audiences are naturally full of energy, cheering and applause. Others are all sitting there with blank faces. Don't get me wrong, the appreciation is always huge for the show according to feedback. I am not naturally an extroverted outgoing type, it takes a lot of character changing to bring out the charismatic type. I would compare my actual personality to Lance Burton. Can we share tips on bringing quiet, uncertain audiences out of their shells to a fired up atmosphere?

That's the reason for warm-ups. Jokes, gags, and other stuff that is not magic but loosens them up and gets them on your side. My mentor, Bob Brown, always said that if they like you, they'll like your magic. And he was right.

Starrpower is right; I don't open with magic, but with comedy and audience interaction.
The disgraced Bill Cosby once wrote that if you spend the first ten minutes getting the audience to like you they will laugh at everything for the next two hours. Far better than trying to impress them. And once they like you, they will be a lively audience.

Yup! EXCELLEHT SUGGESTIONS!
The late NATE LEIPZIG (about a hundred years ago) said simply, "If they like YOU, they will like what you do." I would add another "thought".....Talk WITH them, not AT, or TO them! Communication is not a "one way thing"! Ask questions! At first, you may get only nods, and perhaps, smiles. Don't give up!

There is, of course, another way to loosen up your conservative audience. For the men, hire a sensual, scantily clad female assistant. And for the ladies, get a couple of shirtless Chippendale-type male assistants.

P.S. Leipzig was very likable.

Some cultures and families are more emotive than others.
As long as they like you and they enjoy the show, be happy. Not everyone has to be loud to enjoy a show. -Mary Mowder |
