I write and create theatre for children, often using magic within the shows, and our next show is 'The Velveteen Rabbit'. At the end of the show the rabbit drops a tear and from there a plant grows and a flower emerges. Just wondered if any of you knew of a trick or illusion where a stalk with a flower on it could grow slowly up from the bare stage? There are fabric 'leaves' on the floor and vertical scaffold pipes covered in fabric to represent 'trees' on the stage. Currently thinking of compressing light fabric and pulling it up from the lighting rig with invisible thread but wonder if there might be an easier and more magical option? Thanks ahead for your help! Tim www.timbrayproductions.org.nz

The key word in your request is "slowly." You could put an appearing wand inside a fabric stem and flower, but that would shoot up too quickly for your needs. I think invisible sewing (monofilament) thread would work for you, but don't think you have to pull "up" to make the flower go up. It can be rigged so that you pull DOWN to make the flower grow up, or even pull back towards the rear of the stage along the floor. Keep an open mind. To make the flower seem to grow from a bare or green leafy stem, you might keep Robert Harbin's "OZ" bouquet principle in mind (described in The Wizards' Journal #14 in the e-Book "Flower Power" if you need a source).
