Ideally the trunk bottom should be able to support all the weight without sagging "IF" mounted on casters. If that is done properly, then the dolly simply becomes a frame to hold the casters in position under crate where you would otherwise mount the casters directly too it. In other words, if the trunk is not sturdy enough unless sitting directly on the floor, then the caster platform will have to be as strong as a floor. If on the other hand the trunk bottom is strong enough to be elevated on casters, then the dolly does not really need to be that strong - it just holds the casters in position.

We always used a furniture dolly to move the trunk center stage, then picked the trunk up off the dolly and moved it forward a couple feet. We didn't spin the trunk once we started performing, and it worked for us. That way we didn't worry about locking casters or the trunk moving on us while performing it.
