Guys, check out this awesome new release from Liam Montier and Big Blind Media! Now everyone knows I love Liams work and equally, I love these intensive courses designed to uncover every nuance and detail in a certain genre of magic. This is no exception! I was sceptical at first but in the usual Montier way, my doubts were quickly banished and all that remained was excitement and intrigue! The amount of work and effort the guys put into these projects is crazy. I can honestly say, after viewing the material on this project, If I was given the opportunity to fool two of magics biggest names, Liam Montiers Thick Card Project would no doubt feature!
Here is the skinny taken from their site: http://www.bigblindmedia.com/thick-card-......montier/ The thick card is one of the most overlooked and underused gaffs in magic. Simple and inexpensive to make, yet massively versatile, this innocuous creation is a powerful replacement for sleight of hand. With one dropped into your working deck you will be armed and ready to perform controls, forces, multiple lifts and peeks all without EVER HOLDING A BREAK! The Thick Card is like the swizz army knife of gaffs – it can do so much, yet is all but invisible in the deck. You can have your thick card in play all day long. The deck can be handled by the spectator. It’s undetectable from every angle, and it’s 100% locatable with touch alone. (No more panicked triple checking that you cut at the right place!). This single gaff card will elevate your routines to a stratospheric level – now you can perform forces, controls, peeks and multiple lifts with the cleanest possible handling. As you never need to hold a break, you are free to put the deck down. You can shuffle, cut and mix the deck AND STILL BE IN COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE CARDS! On ‘The Thick Card Project’ your host, Liam Montier, will teach you how to use this most venerable of gaffs . Learn over 90 mins of techniques, tips and ingenious applications. Then delve into the collection of ten incredible routines.  BASIC TECHNIQUES: The right way to make a thick card Which cards to use for your thick card How to cut a thick card to the top of the deck How to cut a thick card to the bottom of the deck Control a selection to the top of the deck Control a selection to the bottom of the deck Having selections made with a thick card loose in the deck  CONTROLS: Overhand Shuffle Control Double Overhand Shuffle Control Another Overhand Shuffle Technique Controlling a selection to 2nd from top Harry Riser’s Mistake Control Advice on using different controls George Kaplan’s Fan Cut Control George Kaplan’s Triple Cut Control Steve Bedwell’s Pinkie Count Control Advice on making the most of the clean handling  FORCES: The Riffle Force Riffle Force For A Selection The Dribble Force Using The Dribble Force As A Control The Cross Cut Force The Stop Force The Peek Force Advice on using a light touch  DOUBLELIFTS & PEEKS: Hit Style Double Lift Tabled Double Lift The Pros & Cons Of A Thick Card Top Peek Bottom Peek Centre Peek The Wind Up Gag Peek Letting Your Spectators Handle The Deck  ROUTINES: Your Card Plus 4 Aces (Rovi) Cards In Harmony (Rovi) Surprise Speller (Bert Allerton) Xray Eyes (Jean Hugard) Xray Location (George Kaplan) Without Sight, Without Knowledge (Rovi) Emotional Reaction (Dai Vernon) The Biddle Trick (Elmer Biddle) Expert Card Technique Reveal Bonus – Liam’s full multi-phase Multiple Selection routine Check out the Big Blind Media Facebook page to be the first to find out about our exciting new releases! We've got what I think is the first review in the UK: http://www.bicycle-cards.co.uk/2015/09/0......-review/
I have to say, it has made me think again about a technique I probably wrote off in my mind years ago. If you're a really experienced card man this probably isn't for you - but if you're just starting out or want some material that allows you to concentrate more on presentation then this is well worth a look. Cheers, Phil |

Steve Bedwell published a fantastic booklet on the thick card (Thick Schtick) some 20 years ago. He uses it in his performances, and Bedwell's no slouch with cards.
It's all in the reflexes.

Hi Illucifer - yes - Liam references Steve's work in the DVD - I think that would be an excellent investment if you wanted to think more about this tool.

Is there mention of the famous Tony Kardyro aka Senior Torino, he published a book on tricks the thick card, with excellent routines he performed in the night clubs of New York.

Hi Bill. Not as far as I remember. But it sounds interesting - I'd like to have a look at that book. Do you happen to know the name?

The thick card is a great tool until your spectator wants to shuffle the deck. If they do a riffle shuffle they will detect the obvious click. Great for overhand shufflers though. You just never know how someone will shuffle.

Does "The Thick Card Project" actually come with one or more thick cards? (Or is this yet another crafts project?) If included, is the thick card(s) Bicycle?

I don't think sticking a couple of cards together, can be classed as 'crafts'!

There is actually 2 methods for shuffling the deck. Pull out your Royal Road To Card Magic book and relearn the Hindu Shuffle. Most laypeople will knot know this method of shuffling, but some sort of do it with a series of cuts. Tony Kardyro did table hopping before it was called "Table Hopping". -------------------------------------------------------------- Other card books by Tony Kardyro Your Deck Your Card, Published 1948 by Conjuror's Library Kardyro's Kard Konjuring published by Tannen Tony Kardyro also has a great little routine with a half dollar and quarter, or English Penny and quarter that is Supreme as well for table hopping. A multi-phase routine. |

Thanks Bill - that's really helpful. I did a bit of googling and it seems the routine is still available, so I might get me one at some point.
Corindaman - you made me smile. And I agree. Making a thick card is not a craft project. And of course, you can make one in whatever style deck you use. |

Creator: Liam Montier
Publisher: Big Blind Media MSRP: $ 30 Skill Level: all DVD Run time: over 90 minutes Type of effect: card control library Manufacturer's Write Up: Thick Card - a double thick playing card used as a locator card, a peek device, an automatic double lift facilitator, a break-less control gaff and a sleight free forcing machine! The thick card is one of the most overlooked and underused gaffs in magic. Simple and inexpensive to make, yet massively versatile, this innocuous creation is a powerful replacement for sleight of hand. What's in the box? One DVD and a thick card gimmick Key points: entry level magic - there is something here for everyone How are the production values: This is a Big Blind Media production so it's very similar to some of the other DVDs we've reviewed. But overall top notch. Is it well made: both the DVD and gimmick are well made Is it well taught: Liam Montier is very thorough and leaves no stone unturned. He offers several tips and ideas and is very clear about all of his explanations. My thoughts (what I personally liked/disliked): I liked that this project sought to be the quintessential voice for this gimmick. Liam does an excellent job to argue in favor for this device and I think he does a great job convincing his audience that your magic could be improved with this. Storage? Does it "pack flat?" your thick card should slide seamlessly into your card case. Does it "play big?" I don't know that any of these effects will play any bigger than a card trick without a thick card. The gimmick doesn't have any impact on your audience, only on your ability to perform. How practical is this in the real world? (can it really be done?) Absolutely, this is entry level gimmickry designed to enhance your card controls and forces. How original is this idea? this is very ancient technology, but certainly one that can be resurrected for a modern audience. Overall score: 8/10 + If you want to see my full review with even more of my opinions and ideas you can visit this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4onpHMEZZE |

Any one wiser than me verify if this DVD principle does what it says on the box ? I'm very much a hobbyist with no further ambitions to do anything other, and to be honest I just don't have time to practice enough with sleights etc. to get anywhere as near as proficient as I would like to be. So yes, guess I'm looking for a "short cut" (Please don't lambast me for this...in an ideal world I would be dedicating the rest of my life to practicing from the Royal Road). So..just wanted to know if from real life experience this has made a difference to your magic. I know the basic controls, sleights, lifts etc, just not confident or practiced enough to do them proficiently and wondered if this principle would help |

I picked this up today. Its over two hours of instructions on making a short card, using it for controls, forces, and several card tricks you can do with the short card. The ideas behind the tricks aren't original but they have added value using a short card.
I've watched this through once now and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm already flowing with ideas on how to add this idea to my existing set. Eugene Burger talks about making his magic as direct as possible. This is certainly one way to do that. You can be so direct using this idea that its a bit unfair . |
