That excerpt sounds a lot more honest than most rock biographies I've read ...

Wow - disagree with her on some things but admire her honesty.
That's bravery. |

She has disappointed me severely by blaming the victims of rape for the crime. The rapists are to blame. If she truly believes what she said she is doing a disservice to both women and humanity. If she has just said it for controversy - equally likely - it does not say much for her character.

She didn't blame the victims of rape for the crime. She was making the point that going into a Hell's Angel's den, high on queludes and highly flirtatious--makes her partly responsible for having been raped. Whether she is right or wrong about the circumstances of her own rape is not really something for those who weren't there to get all huffy about.
She did something very stupid, and was raped. Telling us about it is hardly a disservice to women and humanity. It was HER experience to tell, and she decided to tell it the way she sees it. |

If I leave my keys in the ignition of my unlocked car, am I partially responsible for it being stolen?
If I walk through an ugly part of town at night fanning out $100 bills and singing "I'm In The Money" am I partially responsible for getting mugged? If I leave an open can of cat food on the counter, an I partially responsible for it getting eaten? I don't think that absolves the thief, mugger, or cat from their infraction. |

I agree Starrpower.
In another interview, I think I heard her say that she just doesn't think women should put themselves in dangerous situations...which is common sense for anyone really. And, she admitted putting herself in a bad situation, and not getting out of it quickly enough. Still, it doesn't make a crime any less of a crime if the victim acts less like a victim.

I am with Starrpower on this - the only person to blame for a rape is the rapist. I have often been in the company of scantily dressed women, sometimes women who were intoxicated. And I managed not to rape them. Most of us manage that. Nobody asks to be raped, and her comments are ill-advised.

I'm with Starrpower on this. We have a duty to ourselves and our loved ones to be prudent. Our failures to be prudent do not in any way excuse those who exploit it.
@Balducci, "blame on both sides" is another point altogether, and I think it misses the moral mark.

In my mind, this is crystal clear. Regarding a crime involving a victim, a lawbreaker isn't any less of a lawbreaker if the victim is more of a victim.
To the extreme, if a woman walks down the street with a legally carried weapon, donning legal assault gear, followed by a second woman wearing a bikini and no weapons...and the second woman is raped. Is the second woman less-deserving of her rights than the first woman to prosecute the rapist? Like many of us, I grew up in a neighborhood where we often kept our doors unlocked. If an intruder invaded, their crime was no less than that of the invader who broke a lock to violate the same private premises. I love the Pretenders' and Chrissie's music...and largely her politics...so I hope she simply misspoke (or mis-wrote) in this case. Because she's wrong. Unless I'm getting her wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFCxKxzsUek

No, I don't believe I misunderstood Starrpower's point. We can be vigilent (should be vigilent) but the blame rests squarely on the person who commits the crime. The victim does not share in the blame.

Crips and bloods and Hell's Angels are thugs, criminals, and rapists and murderers. Prudence implores us to stay wide and clear of them. Let me respond to Starrpower: Quote: If I leave my keys in the ignition of my unlocked car, am I partially responsible for it being stolen? Answer: You aren't committing a crime, no. But you are exercising poor judgment. Quote: If I walk through an ugly part of town at night fanning out $100 bills and singing "I'm In The Money" am I partially responsible for getting mugged? Answer: You aren't committing a crime, no. But you are exercising poor judgment. Quote: If I leave an open can of cat food on the counter, an I partially responsible for it getting eaten? Answer: Most definitely. Cats can't be expected to exercise human-like restraint. Quote: I don't think that absolves the thief, mugger, or cat from their infraction. Answer: No, it doesn't. Not at all. But you were still exercising poor judgment. I think Ms Hynde's point was that it's poor judgment to get high and drunk and flirt around with known thugs who wear, in her words, "I heart rape badges". While I understand that the way she worded it (calling it her own "fault") was poor, I think the message is a sound one. I doubt any of the fathers here would disagree that we don't want our daughters to put themselves in such precarious situations. |
