On September 11, 2001, I was living in New York City when nineteen suicidal Arabs flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, murdering thousands of people and changing the world forever. My wife Leslie and I are still dealing with the repercussions of that heinous event.

I was born in NYC. I was living in Hollywood at the time. The first film festival my movie was in was the NY Independent Film & Video Festival.
I stayed at my cousin's house in Westbury. My film played 9/8 so I was in downtown Manhattan for it. I then went back 9/9 to see other films and also on 9/10. The morning of 9/11 I decided to stay at the house to do some laundry and take out their dog. As I walked back inside I got a call from my aunt. She said to put on the TV. The first thing I saw was the second plane hitting. I remember asking my aunt, "Are they shooting a film in Manhattan?" It was shocking to see it happen. I was there for a week and, believe it or not, I was on the first American Airline plane out of there. It was Saturday. JFK was deserted. I'd say there were only about 20 passengers on my plane and just before we were let into the plane the pilot came out and wanted to see everyone's I.D. We flew in a very quiet plane. No one spoke. I had a weird memory years later because I remember I had moved back to NYC on February '93. My friend and I went to a Bally's gym downtown. As we came out we heard sirens and knew something was going on. I realized years later I had also been by the area when the first attempt was made with a bomb filled van. I'll always feel like a New Yorker. I love that city. There are times when it still feels like a bad nightmare that it happened. It changed our world forever. Greg

More than three hundred NYC firefighters died that day. They are my definition of hero.
Rick Rescorla, director of security for Morgan Stanley, is, too. After escorting more than 2,000 Morgan Stanley employees out of the tower, he went back in to make sure nobody had been left. The tower collapsed; his remains were never found. |

Also, let's not forget those who died at the Pentagon and the heroic passengers who forced the White House bound plane down over Pennsylvania.
