Poof-Daddy Inner circle Considering Stopping At Exactly 5313 Posts |
I see a lot of discussions on what to carry, what is new this week, how do I manage pocket (or performing space). Sometimes I think we look a little too deeply into simple things.
On my way home from doing my physical therapy at the YMCA Friday evening, I noticed there was a small festival at the Riverfront in Wheeling so I stopped off and watched an oldies band for a bit. There was tons of overpriced "fair food" and I got hungry so I left the festival and walked up to a local bar/restaurant where they usually have a DJ with a way too loud sound system and a big college crowd. I went early just to have dinner and pulled out a deck of cards and did a couple oldies but goodies for the bar manager and servers (was very slow at the time I was there). As the crowd started growing, I was getting ready to head home and just before I got up the manager brought a couple of his friends down to me and asked if I would show them a card trick or two. I obliged, and it set off a chain reaction of small crowds of college kids to gather round to see some magic. Due to ongoing medical problems and stuff I must always carry, I have gotten used to carrying a mini backpack (bigger than a waist bag, smaller than a purse) so I have the luxury of a little extra space for a couple magic props with me all the time. Armed with 1 red and 1 blue Phoenix deck plus a blank/blank deck, color monte and Alex Elmsley's 4 card trick, a few coins w/a couple gaffs, a TT/silk and a wrist full of Joe Rindfleisch’s Rainbow Rubber Bands - I entertained nearly 75 people in a 2 1/2 hr period at the far end of the bar using a cloth dinner napkin as my mat. The key is - I was doing nothing from the "Latest and Greatest". Everything I did has been in my repertoire for over 10-15 years (with the exception of "Blank Ambition" which that was the first time I tried it out.) You really do not need a lot more than what you can fit in your pockets to entertain as long as you have a wealth of material to justify each item taking up space. I refuse to carry 7 gaffed decks in a briefcase that only do 1 effect each when I can do effect after effect after effect with 1 regular deck. Yet I am not opposed to carrying 1 strong gaff deck effect at a time.
