Hey Café members! You we so helpful with a line for one of my routines, I was hoping you could help me again. The premise is that I produce 4 coins one at a time in an entertaining manner, but in order to get to the second phase of the trick I need to vanish the coins, then go into my pocket to get them. The sleights are irrelevant here. I produce the fourth coin out of my mouth, and pretend to place it into my hand which presumably holds the other three. Now I need a line to make them vanish, and take them out of my pocket. I discarded the premise of offering to have them examined, then opening my hand to show them gone, and pulling them out of the pocket. I am now using this: I say that the coin was feeling a bit down in the mouth, so I think I will let these rest for a while (show they are gone), and use the ones I had all along in my pocket. But not too happy with that. Any ideas?

The first thought that occurs to me is to start the production with a question: Would you like to see an illusion?
At the end, explain that what they saw was, in fact, an illusion, and show them that the coins have vanished (indeed, never existed at all). Then go to your pocket to get the real coins. I may have other thoughts - people here can attest to that, although it's rare - but that was the first. |

The second part of the trick is the main part, and I start off by talking about performing a classic of coin magic, but need to borrow four half dollars. When my assistants say they don't have them, I say that magicians always have coins hanging around, you just have to know how to find them. Then I produce coins from the air, my nose, from the ear, and finally from the mouth. I have a line from another trick that is in line with your thought, that magic is nothing more than an illusion, and since its an illusion nothing ever happened (show the vanish), so I should start by getting the coins from the pocket. It would work, but I think there might be something better out there. But good to get a variety of ideas, and thanks for helping!

It is always presentationaly odd when a magician makes something appear, then later has to reach into his pocket to get that same object. The idea of it being an illusion solves this issue. Along with a couple other things it really is an elegant solution.

Here is an albeit somewhat childlike theme:
Have you ever noticed that coins pop up in all sorts of hiding places? Dryers, sofas, even occasionally right out on the street. Those types of coins are called kangaroo coins because they hop all over the place. Look, there is one here, and one here, another here, and if you aren't careful they can even hop in here (mouth). Come nightfall all little kangaroos hop back into mom's pouch, but I only have this pocket for them. And a bit more dry philosophical version: Being an entrepreneur means being able to see money making opportunities all around you... like here, and here, everywhere you look, and everything you say leads to making money. And it is said that if you took all the money in the world , put it on jumbo jets and dropped it all around the world, rather quickly it would find its way back to the entrepreneurs. Cheers, Tom |

If you are holding firm at just a line...
Handing the "coins" out as you open your hand above theirs... "Ew, don't touch those, you know where they have been. Let's use these clean ones." |

Danny you are right about having to go to the pocket after doing the production. I originally did this effect by holding out the 4 coins plus something extra, and I could do it, but its hard, with a couple of extra issues I wanted to remove. This option is much easier for me, but as you say, not as elegant. That is why I need a real kicker of a line to validate making them disappear and getting them again from the pocket. The other problem is that the production is not the effect, but done to extend the effect I perform afterwards. The illusion idea could work, as could the idea that the coins flew away during flew season, and the last line about being too dirty to examine would work well. Have to mull over the other ideas here since I haven't had time yet to study them well. Again, thanks to all for your help, and if you think of anything else, that would be awesome.

Problem with flu session jokes and to dirty jokes is personally I wouldn't go there.

I wouldn't either, but know many who do. And they are good at it.

I tried several approaches, but my first method was best, so I abandoned the pocket idea. Here is the version I will more or less use. Although the lines and location of each production has changed, the idea is this:
