It would be nice to have a method of secretly palming some coins as I take the other coins out from a coin purse / pocket.
Of course I could put them in my pocket and palm them away afterwards, but this is not truly 'self contained' (Because you need to set-up coins in your pocket beforehand) I'm pretty sure many people have already worked out a solution, but I am stumped. |

I always keep 3 coins in my coin purse, and one loose in the same pocket, so I can palm the coin out as I put the coin purse back in my pocket. This way the attention is on the coins I just took from the purse, and they don't notice my hand staying in y pocket slightly longer then necessary.
Reality is a real killjoy.

As noted in "T.U.C. Appreciation" a magnetic coin or gaff will "catch" on the clip whne you dump coins out of a clasp-purse. Then that coin cna be palmed away or kept separate from the others as desired.
A coin concealed beneath a leather purse can be tossed to the other hand and the hidden one will drag along. I have created many sleights and effect for a Spiral Purse (Rose Purse). It is easy to show the purse empty on all sides while concealing one or more coins -- even to secretly extract and later reload a coin with natural movments. For example, you cna hand an empty purse to a spectator to hold, retrive it and show empty once more as part of an effect -- and all the while it holds a secret coin. No gaff -- just a circle of leather.

David Roth has a method, published in Expert Coin Magic. It's in one of the Wild Coin routines.
The move allows you to secretly obtain a coin from inside the purse, while also removing another coin, or coins, that are to be seen. No new gimmicks/props necessary, and all the coins start inside the purse. This would allow you to show your hands , really empty , before going in the purse. Something you couldn't do, if you made the palm while obtaining the purse. Though, with this latter method, you can still make it SEEM as though your hands are really empty. Edit: or as Zack said, you could just do the dirty work while putting the purse AWAY. -Richie Two-Time |

If the purse needs to stay out for the routine.. and you want to show your hands completely empty in the fairest way possible, then Roths move is the way to go.
You can hold the purse by the clasps, with just two fingers, and show your hands obviously empty. Should you decide to go the other route: For creating the illusion that your hands are empty while holding the purse, have a look at Dr Rubensteins Purse Palm. -Richie Two-Time |

For my spellbound routine.
I have the copper coin in the purse. And the silver coin loose in my pocket. When I come out with the purse the silver coin is under it and I can then finger palm it. And open the purse to show the copper coin. After the routine I do the reverse and put both back in my pocket. Todd |

Guys, thanks for all the ideas.
The putting the purse away ruse seems like the simplest solution. I will also be looking into the Roth method. Thank you so much! /simplymagicweb I have bought a SS, and I am working on it. It is wonderful. |

This probably doesn't need to be said, but keep in mind that in the beginning of any given routine, the audience doesn't know what's coming, how many coins are being introduced, what kinds, etc.
Depending on the routine, you don't have to be that fancy. Say you are going to do a 3 coins across with an extra and have all 4 in the purse. Pull out the stack (nobody knows how many coins are in the stack) let them rest for a moment on the pads of the (say) right fingers and dump 3 into other hand, retaining one in right. It's when the coins are displayed in the left hand after the transfer that your audience sees what you have and how many. All the work is done on the off-beat when they don't know where you are going. That approach won't work for everything but something like it it will get you into a lot of routines. |

Your point that the specs don't know what's coming is a very important one in all of this, so a lot of the little extra pieces of subterfuge we do to perhaps further deceive them is a lot of times only necessary to us. The various ways mentioned here to do this work well enough, but mostly because again, as you mention, "The audience doesn't know what's coming." That's about the biggest deception of all, one that always puts them at an immediate disadvantage as to the magic.
