Hello,

If I wanted to start learning to juggle (from no experience whatsoever) what world you suggest I put on my Christmas list?

The options seem to be Harlequin-style coloured balls which look quite big and solid of pyramid bean bags (tri-its?)

Any advice on a book or dvd to go with them would be appreciated too. Thank you!

YouTube is also a very useful learning tool for juggling, because you can see what you're aiming for.

If you want to juggle balls start with balls. Soft thuds so they don't roll away when you drop them.

I also saw that starting by your bed is a good idea - to make it easier to pick them up again!

I used that book *gulp* 32 years ago to teach myself. I pretty much use its methods to teach juggling still. I plan to go back to it this spring for tips as I relearn 5 balls. Yeah, there's other books - probably even website - but Klutz is simply accessible.

And get (or make) some beanbags. Klutz originally came with soft denim cubes, but if you buy a used copy it may not have those bags. It is worth getting some that you'll stick with later.

I can't praise Oddballs enough. After a house fire, which destroyed virtually everything I owned, Max and Suzy set me up with everything I needed to keep performing and practicing. Jugglers are generally sharing, caring people but they stand out.

I would take a trip to one of the Oddball shops. Under new management now but maintain the same standard of service. Try out different size/weight balls/bags, chat with the staff and any other jugglers.

There's probably a regular juggling workshop in your area. Check them out.

I suggest, 'The Juggling Book' by Carlo.
Go out of your way,
and find a hard cover version, used.
Basically,..it was the 'beginning',
of the renaissance,
of Juggling.
When you hold it,
smell it,
blick through it,,..
for some strange reasons,
you'll feel the magic,
...and understand 'why'.
,...on top of that,
it's a great teacher.
A holy book.

p.s.: I would recomend NOT juggling over a bed.
Running and moving and 'going for it,...
your reflexes sharpen,
and your tummy gets thin(!).
Later, when you advance,
working in front of a wall, is helpfull,..
,control comes quick(!).
Still, bending for the balls,...
ahhh,..that's what Juggling is all about!
