Thanks drosenbe . Where would I find Silly Billy's and Danny Orleans' routines written up? Also is there a specific book you'd recommend worth purchasing, or is it better to make your own?

I use the coloring book as an opener for all of my younger kids shows. I'm not sure what age maybe under 7.
I start by asking the kids to raise their hands if they have ever seen a magician or clown do the coloring book trick. They raise their hands and I say "good, you'll know just what to do". This completely eliminates any cries of "I've seen this one" during the trick. |

Silly Billy (actually David Kaye) has a book and DVD, entitled Seriously Silly, which are probably the best sources currently on children's magic. He has some theory and some great routines.
Danny Orleans has a couple of DVD sets, which details the workings and the psychology of working for children. It's interesting to see how they both approach similar routines with different thoughts. Get both, and also go to one of the Kidabra conventions. |

My 2 cents L-O-L with my coloring book I have a Pencil Box that when opened the color pencils/crayons are there - close it - re/open it and their 'gone' in most any orental(?) shops there was available a drawer box, again - when you opened it 'what ever was there-was there-' closed and re-open its gone. at times I had the child hold the closed box-but first held it 'high' where they couldn't reach it- then said "oh I'm sorry -here hold it carefully' same can also be done with a 'change bag'. The problem is there are so many people doing the same old same old with a prop kids have seen for years. Yes, you can change it up, put a new spin or story on it but I'd really change the look if you're going to go that route. If you don't capture their attention and they see it's the same old magic coloring book they just, as kids do, yell out letting you know they've seen this before or how it's done.
For my money I say use the technique but ditch the presentation they've seen over and over. Go for originality. |

Scroll up to STARRPOWER'S POST, November 22.
Walter Gibson who "ghost wrote" the MARK WILSON book, was just passing along an old idea when he mentioned the STAMP ALBUM IDEA. I saw LORING CAMPBELL (Loring had toured with CHAUTAUQUA!) do it in his school show in >>1950<< and, I'm sure it was old, then! BUT, 'stamp album' illustrates the point that the PRINCIPLE can be used in many ways! IIRC,Burling Hull 'invented' the Svengali DECK. It uses the same principle. I think Scot's "Discovery of Witchcraft" calls it the "Blowing Book".

The earliest source of that routine that I've found is John Brearley around 1926 ((Magicpedia and New Tops) I had met up with William Kalush at the Conjuring Arts Research center a while back and he had a version of the magic coloring book from the 1700s and I think it was from Italy. I'll have to go back and find the pictures I took that day. It was not the typical coloring book, but utiilizing the same principle. It was on a table right next to a 1800s mind reading picture book using the same principle as the 21 card trick. Jim Steinmeyer uses the coloring book (or more accurately, the blow book) principle in his Making Time and Building a Better Slot Machine routines in his Conjuring Anthology. It just goes to show, that old principles can be used in new ways.

Hee hee....I MUST be getting old! I certainly....Heck NO! I AM OLD! Yes! TARBELL!.......and, if ANYONE WOULD HAVE AN ACTUAL SPECIMEN FROM THE 18TH CENTURY, IT WOULD BE BILL KALUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Was it "printed" on parchment?)
Thanks! David! You qualify for the "Jay Marshall Award". Now, the 21 Card Trick.......I always had trouble with that one....then Jon Racherbaumer took me aside and explained.............. P.S. Hey...didn't Henry Ridgely Evans mention the blow book principle on stone tablets with cuneiform inscriptions??

I used the Magic Colouring book for approx 2 years for all of my sales workshops I ran.
Works well with adults given the right patter. After the trick I always switch with the blank colouring book and leave it on my desk. I pay no attention to it, and without fail at the end of training someone picks it up to have a peek. 😀 It made me look like a demon. 👹 |

I'm pretty sure "it's in Tarbell" is accurate for 90% of what people perform today! I guess I can't help myself when it comes to the history and evolution of effects. Rachembaumer's book on the 21 Card Trick is wonderful. Anyone who dismisses a concept outright, just doesn't know how to use it. How about doing a version of the 21 trick for kids shows by using Pokkemon cards or baseball cards? As for H. Ridgely Evans, I'd love to have an actual book of his (stone tablets or otherwise), but have to settle for the e-books.. Quote:

I think there is a routine in a Robert Neale book (or maybe it was something I read and I thought it should be a routine in a Robert Neale book) about dying three deaths... first when the body stops functioning, second when the body is burried and third when the person's name is no longer spoken (a little internet research attributes that quote to David Eagleman). Stories help keep the names spoken.

Ah! The Magic Colouring Book. If you do it, just have a different presentation. Yes. Having one or making one that people have not seen is good but an original presentation which captures the kids attention is better.

I stopped using them because they are over-exposed and over-used by magicians and clowns. There was often 1 or 2 kids who had one or knew how it worked. When I lived in Oregon it was less of an issue, in that area it wasn't seen and used as much so it wasn't an issue. Kids under 6 or whatever are less likey to know how it works, but still it just seems like not the best choice. Having said that, if people haven't seen it too much and don't know how it works, it can be excellent if you have a good routine/presentation. Not sure if using one that is uncommon or making your own would help, maybe it would. If you do use one, get one that is less common than that one you see for sale everywhere, or make your own, it's not hard.
And on the same topic, many people use it in combo with disapearing crayons, I used to buy the ones that were made with real crayons but those broke or melted too often, and the kind with fake crayons don't look too good. I made a set with markers, they were bigger and don't break. You have to remove the inside marker thingy and cut the bottom off the outer plastic tube, tape and/or glue them together, and will probably have to cut a hole out of the box or make the hole bigger.
