Obviously retirement left me with time on my hands, even after practicing the banjo. So I'm wondering:
1a. How difficult is it to learn card splitting? 1b. How difficult is it to do once learned? 2. Is it worth the effort? 3. What instructional resources would you recommend?
I feel more like I do now than I did before.

1a - It depends on you. Some people pick up the knack easily, some don't.
1b - Fairly easy most of the time once you've gone through a few decks. Sometimes you'll encounter a "stubborn" deck, but for the most part you'll split very quickly and easily. 2 - Depends on how many gaffed tricks you perform and if you feel like it's worth the time investment. 3 - The Martini DVD that Stanyon mentioned, as well as Blake Vogt's downloads on Theory11, Gary Plants' download on Penguin, Don England's DVD, Jeremy Hanrahan's download on Penguin, and the ebook The Gaff Factory by Craig Matsuoka are all very good resources.

I have them all and split a lot myself but I feel the DVD "The Art of Card Splitting with Martini" is probably the most comprehensive "if I only had one" resource. Not to take away from the others, they just don't teach as many different things. Blake Vogt's stuff will help you with speed (and accuracy) when you get the gist of splitting. "The Gaff Factory" by Craig Matsuoka is a go-to resource for me, but I think I learned the most from the Martini DVD.

Thanks to a heads-up PM from Poof-Daddy, I got this for $4.95 on Cyber Monday: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/4416 and am very pleased. Based on other recommendations (including his), I'm going to add the Martini DVD in a couple of weeks. The two should keep me occupied for a while. (I'll probably get restless again come mid-winter.)

I'd say it's fairly easy. I've made a couple of gaffed cards myself but I don't really use them. Maybe aside some doublebackers

When it comes to card splitting, I really think the "visual route" is the better way to go.

Sounds like good advice. I'll go for the DVD. I have one of his others and it is excellent.

I ordered the Martini DVD yesterday, along with other various and sundry. I look forward to spending that long, dismal gap between Christmas and New Year's destroying some cards as part of the learning curve.
While I'm waiting, I'm looking into adhesives. Gary Plants recommends tire repair cement (because it's thin); Marty Grams suggests Elmer's No-Wrinkle Rubber Cement; and there seems to be a contingent that is strong for dry-mount paper, which I've had some experience with. Any other suggestions/opinions on adhesives, with why or why not comments?

Elmers no-wrinkle is what I use mostly. When you start "really" getting into gaffing you will want to play with some DMT (The Gaff Factory by Craig Matsuoka has a lot of that info) (also much more expensive than Elmers)

He actually took some time to get his second vid out. Quite a bit if I recall. I would love for him to come out with some more. His teaching is great and I would love to see an "advanced gaff" vid from him for starters (like flap cards and other specialties). I really like him as a creator too. His sense of humor is awesome. This "Revealed" video made me laugh so hard I cried because I know there is some little "internet Houdini wannabe" who believed it. I can watch this over and over and love the comments (if you view from youtube) even more.
