A cool effect called Stargate.
Who originated it? Who might build it? Who performs it? Any books about the methods involved (?)

....and there's also this other version that has less appeal:

This is a small piece of footage of Duo Absolon, performing their original, one of a kind, illusion.
As far as I know they build this illusion themselves. You cannot this illusion in a book.

I'm not sure you're right John, these look like apples and oranges.
The second link shows an effect which was indeed invented by the Hamners and named "Stargate" by them.
The first one looks much more like a throwback to Howard Thurston's "Vivisection"...

...although the method and/or performance may very well be unique to Duo Absolon - but the name sure isn't!

I don't know why illusions like this one aren't performed more. Not only does it's open center look cool and give striking effect....the trick is more of a head-scratcher than something like the overplayed Interlude trick.

I'm sorry, am I supposed to be offering an apology for not being aware of something that has never appeared in video or as a picture on the internet (since no link
of evidence is being offered), that only "occurred" in Europe 36 years ago when I've never been there? I guess if those are the ground rules I'd better shut my big
fat mouth and stop offering my "best effort understanding" to those asking. (And since someone is being coy I'm not even sure what my "transgression" is but I suppose
it's so great I'm not even entitled to know THAT.) I'm sorry for whatever that is but I think a bit too much offense is being taken about this.

Jeffl. I'am sorry that you're mis understand me. I'am NOT offending YOU.
Sorry for you, but not everything is "stored" on internet.

prestidigitation: I'am not Sherlock Holmes. I was in the audience during that performance in 1979 and it was beautiful to watch that clock-illusion of Many Thou

Vivisection was invented by Ed Massey. One of the only illusions he invented.

Thank you for clearing THAT up. (I was pretty sure Jarrett was the WRONG answer but that wasn't enough to steer me to the right one.)

I have ED Masseys original notebook and it's in there. I could probably email you the page but of you just look at the photo, it's pretty easy to figure out.
The best aspect, on the build is the trim that "diminishes size because of layers"
•That's a paraphrase of the name of a principle in one of Sharps books.

(It's 1am and I'm not awake)

With the correct "treatment" the inner and outer rings can appear much thinner then they are.

Agh. Masked Magician.

Anyways, I found a newer version of the effect on Penguin Magic. I think I'll go for it, it's still a remarkable looking illusion.
