This was aired tonight at 9 PM, not to impressed with the magic, a lot of tricks you can purchase from Penguin Magic. Just to many, "Pick A Card" tricks. Running around Las Vegas showing tricks to supposedly strangers. Had a couple unique tricks for television only. Just did not hold interest.
Magic presentation at what is considered close-up magic, and the tricks today have really progressed over the last few years. Thing is I seen through ever trick he did, that I happened to watch. |

I thought the show was about 1 1/2 hours too long. Would have liked to have seen more of "The Illusionists".

I don't believe Matt was attempting to trick magicians . That's another show.
It was intended for the layman. Yes, it was obvious to magicians but spectators enjoyed it. Matt has a personality which people enjoy. That's part of what made him successful on AGT. It was nice seeing this on television. "The Illusionists" was also pretty good. My wife freaked out watching the body cut in half routine.

That is just it, I seen no personality in this this guy, just a lot of spectator management, which is good, but no charm. Just a lot of the instant trick. He did finally sit down to show a 4 Ace Assembly, but did not interact with the spectators in an entertaining manner.
The Card through Window was puzzling why he did not have the girl check it out that it was on the other side, then no one went to the other side to remove the card. Again, a plot without a routine. It made no difference who the magician was, as anyone could have been doing those tricks. |

The last trick he did where he vanished from the ferris wheel pod and ended far away. Still scratching my head.

I have seen Matt's special and I congratulate him on putting in the effort, hard work and time to make a television special. Especially, at such a young age.
It is his first TV special, and let's be honest, as magician's, we simply look at the "tricks" and find it hard to get a true feeling of the performer's personality. TV is very different to performing live. It's great that you guys share your opinions on the show, but maybe, try zoom out and see the "whole picture" of what Matt has accomplished. I wish Matt all the best with his live Vegas show and look forward to seeing more of him on TV. |

Much the same as David Blaine transformed the way people looked at close-up magic, Franco is approaching it from a different perspective. He's got a TV special, he's got a Vegas show. He must be doing something right. Rather than say he has no personality, it might be better to examine the way he does magic, and to see if there's anything in his presentational approach that would help you (and me) better connect with our audiences. I just don't want you coming off like one of those old grumpy magicians who say, "That's not magic. Why, when *I* was a kid...."

What does it even mean to say that someone doesn't have personality? Of course they have. I just take it as it's not personality that particular person likes. Way Mat Franco presents himself is.. how to describe it.. really relaxed and not taking himself seriously at all. As far as I've seen from AGT etc he's solid with his presentation and tricks he uses. Not my favorite magician by long shot, but if I were to go watch his show I'd expect some lighthearted, comical, easygoing magic.
Like for me I feel he's one of those guys, because of how he presents himself etc. that he will never have super impressive show, but also never super bad show. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. |
