Dancing canes have hit the "spin jam" crowds.
They're more a juggling prop now in a lot of circles. http://www.flowtoys.com/flowlight-wand/

While I haven't done busking so far, I have kind of toyed with idea of doing it in future. Personally since I use cards I would probably start doing flourishes and attempt to build a crowd that way. Also costumes(more specifically a mask) is something I might try out.
Like I'm thinking that doing some of those really loud/big flourishes probably makes someone to look for a moment. When they do that I could make it clear to them that I noticed(point at them or just watch towards them for a moment) and do a card vanish or color change etc. Haven't tried out, but I'd recon that would work for me. |

Long string wands go with the belly dancing, fire (torch) juggling and other crowds. Dancing canes are still cool and gets people to notice. It's hard to pull off thread work with these crowds tho. |

My friend makes a loop out of a rope and sets it on the ground then tells people to jump into it and see what happens. He then pretends to "lasso" them and makes a big laugh out of it. He then hands them the rope and says "Here check it out" then goes into a rope routine.
It almost forces people to stay and watch without being overly pushy or tricking them into it my making them thin you want something else (like a picture or directions or something)

If people can see from your costume that you are a performer then it will work. if you look like a normal person, I would feel tricked.

Have you ever tried staring intently at the sky. When people ask what you are staring at don't reply. Tjen after a couple people stop begin by pulling out a coin from thin air and do a coin routine.

Hi,
I've had LOTS of success with just 2 linking rings- 12" of course for best visibility. I just keep linking and unlinking in MANY different ways and people first slow to see and some stop to watch and I engage them and ask "could you help me do a cool magic trick?" If they agree I go into the crowd gathering stuff and others (hopefully) stop. If they say "no thank you" and keep walking I just keep doing the rings. I've found that once you get one or two folks to stop the crowd slowly builds. The large rings make noise and are visible from a distance. |

To get my first couple of people, I simply "pitch" my show as people walk by... I use Revolution by Gregory Wilson (constantly spinning a deck of cards on my finger) as my "visual hook", at the same time pitching my show to them using a very small amplifier... works like a charm...
When the crowd is lighter I use Don Drivers "dollar bill bally" to stop them dead in their tracks to draw a crowd... again, works miracles for getting those people to "stop and watch". |

I don't remember the name of the fellow, but I've seen a guy few months back putting his pouch and a few "magic looking" items (rings, few silks, cadrs,...) on the ground and then taking a few steps back to look at it from many angles. As if he had no idea what all that was doing there.
As it turns out him being curious (pretending to be, at least) of something made others stop and look at his stuff too. And when he had a few people he just shrugged and began performing as if the stuff on the ground wasn't his. Of course nobody believed that for long, but just having someone look at something peculiar will interest other fellows (for 10 seconds, so he went in as soon as a few people were wondering with him what was all tht stuff doing there.) Of course he was looking at his stuff in a very exagerated fashion, with eyes wide open and interested mumbling to help the passer-by notice him. And I guess he was pretty carefull for other people going in to take or examine the pouch and props from up close. Weird way to do it, but it worked for him so why not give it a shot? |

Ask anyone if they've lost their wallet while your holding a wallet. That will get their attention.
Then produce fire from the wallet. That will get their interest. Then produce something from the wallet, such as a sponge ball, ring, a bill, coins. That will get their desire. Then you've got em. |

Its misleading.
you are relying on tactics to stop people. when in fact you, an interesting human being, should be and is enough. if you are not working, then you have work to do. |

Easier said than done. If you're being paid to entertain in a strolling environment and everyone is preoccupied,it can be awkward, inconvenient and also intrusive.
Eye contact and also various facial expressions, i.e. Surprised, puzzled, friendly, mysterious and so on. |

Go out and do it, then come back and talk about it. Too many easy chair street performers. Get out on the streets and you'll find out what works and what doesn't, right away.

What "works" is often times tied to your personality and persona... what works well for me (see my post above), may not work at all for someone with a different style, personality, voice, etc. Here on the Las Vegas strip where I perform nightly I see a variety of methods that magicians are using to attract an "edge"... I worked to find what methods are effective for me, but my strategies certainly are not universal. As you get out and perform, you'll find your own persona and hopefully find an effective way to stop people that is comfortable and works for you. |
