Just thought this might be an interesting topic. Obviously the age of the child can make the list vary a lot. Here are some from me:

I've adapted some of my favorite "parlour" routines for use as close-up magic. My close-up set includes: Miser's Dream; One cup/ball type routine (using hat in lieu of cup); cut & restored rope; finger-puppet mouse; sponge balls; production of a banana from my empty hat; coin routine in which a penny grows to half-dollar size, then to jumbo size (somewhat like Dishonest Abe in concept, but no magnifying glass is used).

I've been doing Double Cross by Mark Southworth for about a week for kids 8 & up and adults, and it kills, they love it and it's easy to do. Sponge bunnies are always a hit - I do it 3 times with the 5" extra big one mixed in at the end. Holey by Sankey. CardToon 1&2. I have a bunch of stuff, and most of it works for adults too, though I don't perform much for adults, but it's good to be ready for them. The thing I've found for strolling for kids at events is that you are likely to need A LOT of material because there may be less kids than you planned on, or there will be kids that will follow you around all day on and off like you are the pied piper. I often bring a small lefler suitcase so I can bring a few puppets, Misers dream bucket, and misc stuff in case I need it, and then I have a table and storage too. On the other hand, many people do very well strolling with very little stuff on hand, but I like to have lots of stuff, and I do strolling vent so I need storage anyway.

How many of you guys offer your services as a strolling magician at events (not at restaurants) for kids? I do it many times per year, sometimes mixed in with strolling vent, balloons, caricatures, and or shows. How many of you do strolling magic for adult events also?

I do strolling and close-up magic for kids. But it's usually at company picnics, mall events and other outdoor family events. I also do a street close-up set just for kids. I do some adult strolling magic at company cocktail parties and private parties.

I like using coins and coin shaped objects.
These include washers, that I call brain washers. Along the way I use age and venue appropriate sound generators, harmonicas and interesting miniatures. Along the way I use things from my stand up act including Bizarro's Glue Bit Unstuck, mosquito whistles (could have been listed under sound generators) and mini puppets. (Eyes over fingers) Years ago I used to do a lot of themed stuff such as starting out with Tie bits using of course my Sponge Bob Square Tie.

Include lots of letting them look at the objects (if they aren't covered in sticky foods LOL). For the very young, I bring a Jacobs Ladder and I let the Kids try it (They will need help both with taking turns and handling. I wish they made one with a handle on the side). For the little kids I hold their little hand under mine and hold the edges of the block myself and guide them with my movement. Make a big deal about it when it works. For them the MOST fun is the celebration of victory. I do a very simple card trick I cobbled together called "Find Your Friend's Card". My favorite is when one generation does this for another like Grandma finds Granddaughter's card or vise versa. Card is chosen by Tina, She shows it (to others and Grandma if she chooses to. That can be funny) and Grandma gets a lucky card to help find it. Tina's card is mixed in (controlled to top). You show the card is not on the bottom. That would have made it easy, Sorry Grandma. Oh, maybe it is on the top, that would really help, (DL), No?... OOH, tough luck Grandma. (Casually shuffle the chosen card to the bottom) You'll have to resort to Magic and that works, maybe .... one in ...52? times. A wan smile and wish Grandma good luck. Hindu Shuffle from center as you give instructions to Grandma about dropping her card in FACE UP (tap the face of the balance where you want her to drop the card) as you shuffle through the cards. Draw from the bottom and start hindu shuffle. Grandma drops her card, face up, in the Hindu Shuffling deck, hopefully, to end up face to face with Tina's card. Remember, if this doesn't work, it is Grandma's fault, you had nothing to do with it. An easy trick with lots of funny by play but SO GREAT for drawing a family together. Grandma is Magic! Be sure and tell Grandma that now that she is a Magician, she mustn't tell how she did it because Magicians never reveal their secrets. If you can do these, you can do it but you can use other methods too. The DL is not a must. It is all about the fun. maintain a Break, double undercut to top, DL, Controlled shuffle to the bottom. Hindu Shuffle drawing packet from center Hindu shuffle from the bottom when Grandma drops the face up card into the balance of the deck in your left hand (if you are right handed) as you shuffle. -Mary Mowder |

KISMIF (Keep It Simple Make It Fun) is, IMO, the basic principle in entertaining EVERYBODY, and, ESPECIALLY "MOPPETS"!
No. 1 in my list of CRITERIA (again, for everyone, and, ESPECIALLY for MOPPETS, is VISUAL EFFECTS. Insofar as possible, nothing should happen "under cover'. I like Mary's thinking. It is evident that she has had plenty of experience working WITH the little folks. Involvement and interaction are also extremely important. Little ones are not passive watchers! CONVERSATION! Talk WITH, not AT or TO them! Ask questions! Props that only "do" one thing, are not nearly as useful or practical as GENERIC props! Silks, balls (sponge and Fakini golf balls) rope(s) paper napkins ETC., (iF you've read TARBELL!) can be used for many different tricks, and, you can thus ad lib. Criteria #2: PACK SMALL AND LIGHT. #6: NO SET UP! #3 ANGLE PROOF, #7: NO TABLE NEEDED. Read my book!
