I think Bizarre magic provides a fantastic opportunity for Christians to share some truths. Not is the silly --my life was broken before I met Christ and just like this cut rope... kind of drivel.
But in providing some powerful imagery and ancient story-telling. In other the words, the art, artistry and power of bizarre magic but with a different worldview than many bizarrists might have. More in the line of CS Lewis, Tolkkien, and recently Stephen Lawhead. So, I wanted to ask if there are any kindred folks? |

David, bizarre is what you make it ! IMHO
It, is very open to your performance style and presentation. Respectfully, what is truths ? something, you view as or others view as ... Just, don't do a bunch of card tricks ! ~G

Considering I'm a conservative Lutheran pastor, I would say that yes there are kindred spirits here. And Godzilla is right - it is all what you make it. I don't use darque magick to preach but I don't shy from the opportunities to use it either. And remember- it is MAGIC. It is illusion. The devil is not going to rise up through it.

David there was some discussion on sharing the truth you speak of in the Heaven & H3ll thread (well more like on the Alchemy Moon forum which that thread leads to). You are right there are not many routine available. It's mainly based on a real Christian story (there are none currently for sale so I'm not pitching product). This is an educational routine based on the dark history of the church. It's food for thought and a positive message and an homage to those who died for their beliefs. Puts thing in perspective using real bizarre magick and an authentic looking utility prop that should be in any decent bizarrists tool kit, a dark/light pendulum that didn't come from a new age shop.
http://alchemy-moon.freeforums.net/threa......pendulum "The Nine Ipswich Martyrs who burned at the stake for their protestant beliefs against the Roman Catholic Church are the focus of this tale. The cross is believed to have belonged to a priest named Robert Samuel, and is the only remains left from the fire. It takes place in one of the earliest known inhabited sites in Britain called Ipswich, in the town center called The Cornhill, a public market place dating as far back as the Saxon era. Artifacts going back to the stone ages have been unearthed in this area. This is where the cross from 1555 was discovered."

Thank you. I posted the same message on the Christian site and the messages were not nearly as helpful.

In their Sense and Meaning 2012 lecture notes (20-23), Ranier Mees and Thomas Heine teach an effect using the classic Ring and Chain magic trick. Their story is set in World War II, in a concentration camp in which Ranier's grandfather, Peter Mees, was a prisoner. The story involves a message about friendship and encouragement that Sister Rose shared with Peter, contributing an experience that gave him hope and changed his life.
I am a retired (Methodist) divinity school dean and professor, and it occurred to me to ask what a Roman Catholic nun would have actually said to a despairing prisoner. I did some homework, and even interviewed several nuns. They all said that Sister Rose would undoubtedly have improvised the Catechism in which Peter was rooted as a child. So now I tell the story more like it would have happened. In several performances this Christmas season, I performed it as an encore following my closer. People love it. George |

For me, bizarre magic is the power of story. I think we've all been drawn in by great performers before a single prop was produced or effect was demonstrated. It's about seduction really. And seduction in this case is done in the telling.
To that end, look at bizarre routines, effects, and props that you are fond of, and consider ways that you could rework them to be more uplifting and hopeful. The methodology may be the same, but the set up and outcome could be more spiritual.

David, I can strongly, very strongly recommend the effect "In opposition" from R.Shane's Pentalogy. I've performed it for christians and while I found that I sometimes have to push people a little to go along with what seems like a deal with the devil, the ending has an amazing impact (in my experience). The only thing is that I don't think you can do any other effects after that one.
Pentalogy btw has plenty more for you I think. There is also humor in there with a religious theme, like "Paying the bill". The book is out of print, but when a copy comes for sale, do pick it up even if you think it's pricey or find someone who has it and beg, plead, throw a tantrum - do whatever you (legally ;-) ) can to get a hold of it. |
