You know the card trick where you say "think of a card" then you say "the name of your card is (a persons' name like "Ed") Ed". The finale' is where their thought of card has "Ed" written on the back?
does anyone have any links to magicians performing this trick? I perform this trick, but I'm trying to customize it and would like to watch other magicians for ideas.... |

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but there's also Erma La Fource from Mike Close (In Workers 4)

The ultimate version, in my honest opinion, is Joe Riding's 'FRED'.
Released in 1979, and improved with 'The Complete Works of Fred' manuscript in 1980, this was the first version (that I am aware of) that only used ONE pack - this being placed on the table BEFORE the spectator named the card. Many other versions used two packs; the correct one not being brought out of the pocket until the card was named. Joe Riding's version was therefore significantly cleaner in my opinion. It was not reliant upon roughed or duplicate cards either - the entire pack could be shown. Nothing against Fido (I thought Nathan that was a Don Alan trick and sold by Ken Brooke from 1975?); or indeed the clever principle of the Phil Deck. I guess it's what floats your boat. I still use Joe Riding's version regularly. Certain tricks fit your style and FRED (along with a myriad of Joe Riding's other tricks/routines) still pull in the 'Wows' 37 years down the line. I adore it - possibly the best fiver that I have ever spent in my lifetime.

I know another variant where the deck is partially spread face up and the spectator is asked to mentally pick a visible card, then the deck is closed and the magician names the selected card as say Elizabeth. The cards are then turned over and shown to have different names on the back. Then another partial spread, the spectator is asked to pull out the selection which has Elizabeth on the back.
Not nearly as strong as these effects. So, I just bought Dave. |

Do 'Dave' and 'Fred' use same method?

All the "named card" effects use a somewhat similar (but not identical) method.
Although I've absolutely no association with the product, the "Dave Deck" is a $5.00 download from Penguin, and will give you the basic tools to come up with dozens of variations on this particular theme. Although very simplistic in its overall methodology, it's one of the very few times you'll figure you got way more than your money's worth with an inexpensive conjuring download |
