As a relatively new poster myself, I would like to point out that unlike many more recently built forum platforms, the Magic Café does not automatically forward comments on forum threads to your email inbox, you have to "subscribe" to the thread for that. The OP may not have realized the need to subscribe and may have gotten busy and forgotten or simply assumed since there were no replies forward to his inbox that no one had commented. That happened to me when I joined the forums back in February. I had been reading Café' posts since last summer but due to having a free email account, I couldn't join until I got a non-free email domain.
Fairly new here to kid show magic but I will say that rather than think in terms of "tricks," think in terms of "versatile props with which you can build a routine." The Axtell Magic Drawing Board is, by far, the most versatile and crowd pleasing kid show prop, since you can make it be ANYTHING you can draw. It comes with a sheet full of character ideas. I got the newer big version with the tongue that sticks out, and kids love the progression of eyes, tongue, talking...they just go nuts! It can be a character, a book, a trash can, whatever you can imagine that has eyes and a mouth. It never fails to get a stunning reaction, and can be used as a ventriloquist puppet or just a silent but exciting prop, so you don't have to worry about not being a ventriloquist. Some of the tricks I almost always use that get a great reaction include the silk to appearing cane, breakaway and other comedy magic wands, the Chinese sticks, the shrinking/growing head spiral, and my Houdini chain shackle escape, which I do using a "magic bag" that's basically a fancy pillowcase open on the long end with four ropes at the corners; I get an adult to hold the keys and lock me in and four kids to hold the ropes. Lots of fun and stage filling. The Magic Coloring book can be done a lot of different ways and I like it. I think the most versatile utility prop you can get is a magic change bag. Second most versatile are thumb tips. You can invent tricks and build routines using utility props. I have lots of fun looking at a prop and thinking, what all could I do with that? I try to group tricks into themes and build show concepts around a theme. This way you can develop something uniquely "you." Barry Mitchell makes great kid show props with routines as does Tommy James and the folks at Amazekids. If you can, attend KIDabra or KAX. Christopher T. Magician's free YouTube videos are great as is his DVD and his book.

Totally forgot about this thread!!! I've been performing magic for 6 years and used to be all about the tricks but over the past few years I understand the importance of presentation and patter, I own Ken Webers book and it is excellent. I currently have and do my own kids show however all I was asking were for some effects that you guys like that I could possibly add to my show and make it better

Re Tricky Ricky's comment "Take (Stratospheres), most of my magic friends think that it's a boring trick, yet, it can be a funny and entertaining piece of equipment for children of any age..."
In my school shows, I presented Strat-o-Spheres with a presentation about following directions. The red ball just refused to follow directions and stay at the top of the inner cylinder. After the second attempt to get the red ball to follow directions, I tell the kids "He isn't following directions. I'm going to put him in Time Out." The kids will understand what "Time Out" is. So instead of putting the red ball into the box that comes with Strat-o-Spheres, I put him away in the suitcase I carry my tricks in and as I walk away, I look toward the suitcase and say in a pseudo-stern voice, "You can come back when you're ready to follow directions." Then I go back to the cylinders and put the green ball in; then the yellow one. I cover the clear cylinder with the outer one. When I lift it, the red ball is seen between the green and yellow one. I tell the kids: "You know why the red ball came back? It's because he's ready to follow directions." So I take the three balls. In goes the green one. In goes the yellow one. I look at the red ball and say, "Remember: You came back to show you can follow directions." In he goes. I lift the outer cylinder enough so the kids can see the green ball only. I ask them: "Is the green ball on the bottom?" They yell "YES!" I lift the cover a little more. "Is the yellow ball in the middle?" "Yes!" "IS THE RED BALL ON TOP?" "YES!!!!!!" "GIVE THE RED BALL A BIG HAND FOR FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS!" The teachers like that routine because learning to follow directions is an important part of the elementary school curriculum. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I find that the ones you like to perform and the ones your audience likes are the best. I have tried many. Some work out better for others than for yourself. So try different effects out and choose what you and your audience like. After that, refine and improve your routines. This is what I do and it has worked for me. Cheers!
