I Kiester, (spelling?), is a suitcase with a built in stand. Pitch men used them, one reason being that they can throw their merchandise in them and take off in a hurry if they hassled.


I always thought a keester was the part of the human anatomy that someone knocked you on or you fell on ("He knocked me right on my keester" or "I didn't see that banana peel..my feet went out from under me and I landed right on my keester!"

I don't know what it has to do with a suitcase or a stand...hmmm...which meaning came first?

Well, this doesn't mention a busker's table with retracting legs, but it does give the history of the word.

Apparently, it's use as a "chest" or "box" is from the 1800's whereas it's use for the butt doesn't show up until the 1930's
