I recently saw this film about Philippe Petit, a good film by the way, who walked a wire between the Twin Towers in 1974. While I remember the walk, I didn't know much about the person. Watching the film, made me want to know more. I came across a TED Talk he did in 2012 and realized that the actor portraying him, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, while bearing no resemblance to him in the movie, did a great job capturing his charismatic personality.
Here's a link to the TED Talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/philippe_petit_......igh_wire

I haven't seen "The Walk", but I have seen "Man on Wire", the documentary about the event and I recommend it.

I don't get why this stunt is being glorified.

I won't be watching. I lived through this in New York as a kid. I thought it was a stupid, risky stunt then. I believe that even more strongly now.

It was a wonderful film (The Walk). I have the book now. I am glad that the world contains lunatics like Petit.

REALLY stupid and risky would be the guy who dressed up as Spider Man and climbed one of the Towers. I was working at Marvel Comics in the mail room at the time and Jim Shooter was watching this on a television the typesetter had. I remember him saying; "You know, if he slips, there goes our flagship character!"

I have not seen The Walk but Man on Wire was a fantastic documentary.
Reviews I've read suggest that The Walk pales in comparison to that earlier film. So if you liked The Walk, run to see Man on Wire. :)

But doing something risky out in public where going SPLAT! would provide a lifetime's worth of nightmares for hundreds or even thousands of people...well, I get Opus's point. Still, we're in a magic forum, so we generally revere the exploits of HOUDINI, who also performed risky stunts--and not always in front of a paying audience, but in public. On a side note: one time while hiking in the Bavarian Alps I chatted with a paragliding instructor while we watched a few people launch from a slope nearly at the peak. The conversation was mainly about how he got into it, how much it costs, how dangerous it is, etc. Regarding danger, he said: "Not very. Only three people died [in Germany] last year." In the context--high above several villages, looking at the gorgeous scenery, watching those who had just launched struggle to get their sail in the best position to catch the air and not the strong wind which could blow them back down into the mountain, I thought: now, what if one of these people catch the wind and get thrown down the mountain side and I end up watching them die. After all, three died last year doing just that. And I thought, wow, that would just ruin my day. |

My apologies. It was 575 Madison Avenue. I don't know why I thought it was on Park.
I remember when they moved to Park Avenue, although it was after I'd left. I had a job with a typesetting company that was in that same area. Rough part of town, come out of work and find the ladies of the evening trolling the streets, hiding from the cops behind the center divider. (For those of you who didn't frequent New York City, Park Avenue had a center divider running down the middle of the street.)

I met a famous tight rope walker years ago that my wife’s family is related to by marriage but I can’t recall his name at the moment and I will as my wife later. I have been fan of trapeze artists ever since I saw that old movie with Tony Curtis and that old silent film with fellow climbing the building whose name I can’t recall neither. I think my memory has fallen.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Fellow climbing the building. Harold Lloyd in "Safety Last."

Lloyd was a magic enthusiast. Had an effect in The Jinx IIRC.
