The March 2016 issue of Genii, the largest selling magic magazine in the world, is now winging its way to your mailbox and the digital edition is already live online.
Little known to most magicians, a special “Stars of Magic” issue of The Sphinx was prepared in 1951. It contains items from all of the original contributors up to that point, but today has been forgotten by most. This month it’s my pleasure as our cover story to reprint the whole 13-page article filled with great magic. I’ve added a film of Dai Vernon performing “The Cone and Ball” to go along with the description of his effect. and a film of David Ben gallantly recreating Ross Bertram's "Squeeze Away Coin" after not having done it for 35 years! You’ll also learn tricks from Vernon, Scarne, Slydini, Dr. Daley, Francis Carlyle, Emil Jarrow, and others. Also this issue, Danny Orleans brings us the story of 10 years of Magic Chicago, the windy city’s long-running venue of magic. Organized by Robert Charles and Benjamin Barnes, Magic Chicago has played host to numerous famous magicians and delighted audiences, and after you read about it you may wish to make that a stop on your next trip through Chicago. * Our columnists this month are Kainoa Harbottle, who explains a lovely coin routine (and in less than 2,000 words!); David Kaye ponders the meaning of the first thumbtip and the millions that have followed in “The Expert at the Kids Table”; Dani DaOrtiz meditates on the psychology of The Third Time in “DaOrtiz ala Carte!”; Bob Read meanders through “Hidden Treasures” and tells the tale of the antique clock which remained unrepaired for two decades; In this month’s “Left-Handed” Jeff Prace describes a pretty swift trick involving a winning lottery ticket and even provides the props for you to scan and print out; David Britland takes you back to Paul Curry’s wonderful book Magician’s Magic, written for the public in 1965, and which I fondly remember checking out of my local library when I was about 8 or 9 years old. There’s a fine trick hidden in there, which Mr. Britland makes better in “Cardopolis”; in his “Chamber of Secrets” John Gaughan finds the intriguing “The I–II Die Box,” the creation of Johann Hofzinser. We close it up with book reviews by John Guastaferro, trick reviews by Danny Orleans, and video reviews by Dustin Stinett; and Mike Perovich memorializes the late Jim Patton. We have audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer, plus other videos to tease and tantalize you. Join us today at www.geniimagazine.com |
