No idea where I should have asked this question but anywho...
I'm trying to come up with a method to add a burn mark to a normal card after its been signed! Actually burning the thing doesn't really work, just warps and takes awhile to add a mark. Is there any other way to simulate the look ? Thanks guys |

Perhaps a piece of tape (secretly added) over the signature would work! A slight burn leaves a shadow outline. Jay Sankey in fact uses a false pip in one of his burned card tricks, so this method may work with tape over a signature as well! Try it, and let us know! Lynn

In preparation, burn the card while it's still on the deck rather than holding it as a single card. Then place the burnt card under a stack of books or into the deck and rubberband or use a clip to keep it tight. Let it sit for a day, then take the card out. That should limit the warping.
Now you can put the burnt card into the deck and force it while hiding the back. Just off the top of my head - get a break under the card and dribble force to the break. Hand the spectator the whole deck with the selection on the face, and have her sign the card. When you retrieve the deck, lift a double and blow on the signature as if to dry it. The back of the card will show with no burn mark, but no attention is drawn to this. Replace the double back onto the face, let the spectator rub to make sure it's also dry, then deal the card off and continue. You may need to wristkill the pack to hide the discrepancy of the card beneath the selection changing. T.J. |

Actually burn it but use a lighter turned 'way up' or a candle with long wick so you get a big yellow flame. Yellow signifies carbon/soot/unburned material in the flame you'll get a nice black mark in no time.

Have you tried just using a stamp with a burn design on it? It could pass as a burn if you used the right ink I think. It might be worth a try. I have not done it before. But then you could stamp the card after it was selected.

Holding the card above a match or lighter without actually burning the card will leave a black mark on the card. If you don't actually burn the card it shouldn't warp and the mark should stay on well. It may wear off with timers it will scratch off, but it's very hard to wash off.
Attached is a card I made that has been marked by using 2 matches burning together. I used them when they flared up after being lit so the matches make the darkest mark. http://i.imgur.com/FavWopw.jpg Edit: added the link as it seemed I failed to attach the image. |

Just thought I would update this old thread with a useful and extremely efficient means to give a burnt card effect I just discovered.
The other methods for me were rather difficult and seems to take a while to apply the black scorch marks on the card.. I found using a tiny piece of long-burning white firelighters (used for starting indoor wood fires) very fast and effective, literally half a second, and you have lovely mark on the card of your choice. Hope this is found useful! P@ |
