Hi everybody! I need your advice. I inherited a Broomstick Suspension that had everything but the broom. I will be performing it in a different way and will be using a steel pipe. However, during experimentation I have found the pipe I am using bows outward to an unhealthy degree. My assistant is about 106 pounds, and my pipe is 5 feet tall. I wanted to ask: should my pipe be thicker? (Right now it is just standard thickness.) Trying to shop for thicker pipes has been a nightmare...can't find 'em! Or is there some other alternative I'm missing?
I wait to hear from the wisdom of the group, and thanks to the Magic Café! |

What is the standard thickness?
Inside & outside dimension of pipe? 5ft, does not help. When pole is inserted in the base is it snug or is their play?

Pipe measurements:
5 feet tall Outside diameter: 1 inch pipe wall thickness: 2/16 inch thick The pipe does fit snugly into the base. I guess the other part of the question I'm asking is regarding leads to buy pipe. Plumbing supply places do not have anything thick. (I live in California, BTW.) THANKS! |

Try a local electrical contractors supply company, they sell steel pipe as well as the standard conduit pipe. They have larger diameters as well.
2/16" of an inch is 1/8", sure you measured correctly. That should not have bowed if it was round hardened steel. Don't like to give advice without all the facts. There is the gimmick as well as the floor stand, both must fit perfectly, as you will be responsible for a human not being injury and their life. My advice, if you inherited it, go back and find the proper parts and instructions, or just throw it away. |

Thanks for the info. Yes, I am committed to safety, and will only move ahead as each step is fulfilled safely.
Can anyone chime in who owns this illusion, and what their pole is like? |

The thicker the pole wall the safer.
Also does it fit snug in the base? Is the base level? The unknown is the "magic" that your assistant is using. The magic part that enters the pole. How thick is that? I'll measure my pole tomorrow.

Wow....1" O.D. I have never seen a Broom Sus. with that small an o.d. for the support. The plug on the h****** is usually quite large (I have an Alcorn and a Gossamer harness) Does yours look professionally made/machined??
The proper TUBING (not pipe) to use is C.D. Seamless Mechanical Tubing (C.D. is cold drawn) and the spec is 1015/1018 This is also called on several plans, and is what I have used. (As an aside I bought and sold this stuff when I had a "real" job purchasing thousands of feet at a time from mills.) I have 2 suspensions, and have several brooms/tubes etc. to go with them. I have also chromed a set, and several poles of varying lengths (heights) The fit into the base flange is snug but you do not want it to bind. Blair P.S. Use Google to search the Café, there was a fully detailed thread on the same subject awhile back.

Thanks guys!
The base is level. And even though the pole fits snug in the base, I want to start over with a new pole because of this bowing problem. My h****** is certainly not a Gossamer. It is made of steel, with leather straps (3). If anyone knows where I can purchase the Cold Drawn Seamless Mechanical Tubing that Blair mentioned, please speak up. Or if you use something else that is SAFE, tell me what it is. THANKS! |

Blair pretty much covered it. I also have a Gossamer.
I get my steel in Cali @ Industrial Metal Supply. Your keyword is "industrial metal supply". You might have one in your town. The solution to your problem is to use a thicker walled pipe which would change the dimensions of your pipe. Which also means that you would have to modify or build a new base. If you're happy with your har$$$$$ good for you, if not, get a gossamer. What are the dimensions of your har$$$$ nip$$$?
