I did a search and found a thread about Symbol by Steve Cook & Alakazam. However, it is "locked," and I am unable to post any comments. Does anyone know what that means? I have been thinking about buying this or Token by Paul Richards. Although they look the same, but Token is about 2x the price of Symbols...what do you guys think?
Thanks in advance. |

Tokan is examinable and symbol isn't wihout difficulty so that's one differences. Another one is token is more direct because you don't need to choose numbers and stuff first. So you pay more for token for a more direct trick what is more examinable too hope that helps mate

Also, I believe with Token the ending appears exactly the same each time.
Token is by no means difficult to do but I think Symbol is easier, but of course the presentation is what makes it or breaks it. |

Thanks! I guess Token is a better version of this kind of effect, because it's more direct and examinable. Hopefully, someone has one for sale over at "Tricks for sale or trade."

Symbol and Token are very different effects. They employ different methods and gaffs, and the audience experience is so different that you could perform both effects in the same performance.

Oh, is that right? They look the same to me. Spectator picks a symbol, and you reveal your prediction. Am I right?

Token is frequently in the Penguin "open box" promotion. You may be able to get it at a discount.

It has been awhile since I performed Token, but let me recall what I can.
Token features five tokens with ESP symbols on them, the spectator chooses one, drops it in your black bag, then drops the other four symbol tokens in as well--all while you are holding the bag but your back is turned. Requires no table space. You shake it up, teach in, and pull out the symbol they chose. Symbols does require table space, uses ESP cards and a couple of other props. The two effects look different enough, and use different methods and gaffs. You COULD do both effects in the same closeup or parlor performance, although one may not want to. In my experience, also, you can experience a "miss" with Token; not with Symbol . . . IF you are paying attention! George |

Thanks, Stu. Maybe it's already considered as an "old" trick?

So many wrong things said about Token in this thread.
It does NOT end the same every time. It is 100% - there are no misses unless you screw up. They name (or select - depending on how you want to present it) an ESP symbol, that's the symbol which is on the prediction chip. Unlike most of trailers for something like this which show the best possible outcome, this is NOT the best possible outcome. With the best possible outcome, you don't need to touch the case that holds the token - the spectator can pick it up and remove the token themselves. |

I see how it get confusing. Same background and same people in both trailers.

What I meant is the end reveal looks the same every time, but they can choose any symbol so it may have a different symbol on the token each time. But not having done this for ages barts185 has reminded me that even the reveal will be slightly different (better even) about 20% of the time. One thing about Symbol is that with a little work and extra expense you can make up your own version. For instance, I don't much care for ESP symbols. They just look gimmicky and are not something most people can relate to. So I made up a version of Symbol which uses a football sports theme, which works better for me as I perform mostly casual and the ESP symbols just feel out of place. Also, my sports version can be examined at the end. You can't really make a custom version of Token without going to a lot more time and trouble. And with a token you are much more limited as to what makes sense than you are with cards. You can't repeat either effect to the same person(s). Although while I believe that technically you can repeat Token, it wouldn't make sense because you would have to explain that you have more than one token but then if you say that they may just think you are switching them, etc. So it's not really a good idea. Can't say that I really love either effect because a 1 out of 5 or 6 is not really that impossible unless you can repeat it. But that is just a personal opinion and I know many people get great reactions with both of these effects. For me, although I felt Token was great initially it eventually wound up in a drawer and then I sold it. I've had some fun with my version of Symbol and I enjoy doing it but I don't think it hits as hard with a WOW factor as many other effects so I don't do it all that often. But for a sports or football fan it can go over big. So right time, right place kind of thing. |

Sorry for sowing confusion, guys. I referred to the wrong effect . . . by the wrong name! I could blame it on my age (recently turned 78) but, truth be told, I could have remembered it wrong at half this age! Hey, con't get the wrong idea; I could still take most of you in the weight room.
