So I've decided to build a suitcase table. I'm looking for opinions from other performers on what you might want in a table to see if there's anything I'm missing!
Here are some of the things I already have in my drawings: - Starts as a 24x24x12 case and extends up to table height - On wheels - Adjustable height - Adjustable shelves - Light inside - Removable shelf on the front for displaying items - I considered a grill on the front so I can put my Happy Amp in there - not so sure about that one. I don't really have a need for a well and frankly it would get in the way. What else am I missing? Anyone have little touches or useful tools on theirs they'd be willing to share? Thanks! -Chris.

I built one last year about the same size as you are building. My main concern was keeping the weight down. It finished out at 28 pounds and it probably could have been lighter but I covered it with leather looking vinyl and it looks nice. Just keep in mind final weight when building as you don't want a table that too heavy to carry. One feature I added because I do linking rings was to cut a opening in one of shelves that would keep rings upright and together. Good luck With your table.

Why do you want a shelf to display props? A prop should be visible only when it's "working"!
If you're working on a floor, and the audience is seated on chairs on floor level, a prop that must be on a table top to "work", is impractical! (Sight lines!) I share Jimmy Dunn's thought! (His "suitcase/table", empty, weighs more than my show!) My ENTIRE 45 minute school show weighs less than 25 lbs! --That's PROPS, THE PROP CASE, AND THE WAITERS TRAY STAND. Unless you like paying a chiropractor to "fix" your back, I would make WEIGHT, A PRIME CONSIDERATION!

P.S.: ENTERTAINMENT ISN'T SOLD BY THE YARD, OR BY THE POUND! IT'S SOLD BY THE SMILE, CHUCKLE, GIGGLE, AND LAUGH!
IT'S THE PERFORMER, NOT THE PROPS!

When I was working out of a suitcase/table, I always wished that it had a long folding handle and large wheels so it could be pushed, or pulled along like a shopping basket when it was closed. I stopped using mine when I stopped doing the full stage school fund raisers. Like Dick O, I found that the weight wasn't worth the convenience.

For example when I do my stage 3 Card Monte, I set one card aside which of course ends up being the queen. If I had a nice display shelf on the front of the table, I can set it there instead of leaning it against something else to stand it up. It just makes everything look a little more polished when each thing has its place. Most of what I do is in my hands but there are certainly things that need to be on a table top like Sands of the Desert or the glass to pour into after my Fizz routine. I'm definitely not chained to working on the table top, but I would like to have a case that doubles as a nice looking table for working certain gigs, particularly outdoor festivals. I like the idea of finishing my show with everything already in the case which can be locked up until the next show. The comments about weight are much appreciated though - I'm definitely doing to stay away from 3/4" ply!
