Here is a new topic I guess. I was just PM-ing with someone about show length at preschools. Just out of curiosity, how long is your show? I just about always go 45 minutes, and if they have time for me to go longer and I feel like it, I'll go an extra 5 or 10 minutes - I ask if it's OK to do that. Sometimes they have a tight schedule, sometimes they are happy for me to kill as much time as I want. I was just watching a presentation by a well respected kid show guy and he said he goes 30 minutes due to attention spans. I found that odd cause 45 minutes is no problem, they have a blast the whole time, and sometimes going longer is good too.

My show usually goes about 30 minutes, then I go into balloons for merciful-lord-knows-how-long.
I've found that if you push it too far past 30, SOME of the kids are going to start to deteriorate, and once they do, it will have a knock-on effect.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I offer a 30 minute magic show and a 45 minute magic show (different price points) to daycares, preschools, out-of-school care, and summer daycamps.
Sometimes customers choose a certain package because of price point, but sometimes they choose a certain package because they have ideas about the children's attention spans (they know their group better than I do). - Donald

I don't offer a shorter show at a lower rate because I don't want to make less money and the longer show always works, usually if they want me they will book me anyway. They know their kids but they don't know how a specific entertainer is going to go over, they may think they do, but they don't until they've had that person. I did a show last year and again a few weeks ago for a certain preschool, and they just asked if I could do an open house thing in a few weeks. After I quoted the same rate as last time they said their budget is 150, and asked if I'd go 185. I said no but gave them a 25$ discount because they just had me and they let me film my demo there last year, and it's close. So they booked me anyway. I rarely do discounts, but once in a while I'll do it under certain conditions if I feel like it.
Last week I had a birthday mom said she'd like to switch from the show to just balloons and c thought they'd have trouble staying focused (mostly 5 year olds). Well, I talked her back into the show and it worked very well and she was very happy.

I do 30 minutes for 5-12 year-olds. I do 10 minutes for 2-3 year-olds. It works. They're happy. The client is happy. I'm happy. *smiling happily*

I do no more than 30 minutes for pre-school age children. 45 minutes for any age older.

My 30 minute show / lower fee is MY standard rate for that type of show or that market (the minimum that I'll work for). The longer show / higher fee is when I'm getting a little bit more & serving my customers more. There is nothing about "making less money" in my approach. Giving options at different price points is about "making more money", in my opinion. So, I see my 30 minute show as my normal price level, and see my 45 minute show as my upper price level. I don't see my 45 minute show as my normal price level. - Donald

Donald, sure, whatever works is good. Interesting that so many are doing standard 30 minute shows, or offering a choice. I hadn't really thought about what others do for show length till that lecture.

For my non-childcare shows (events, Christmas parties, churches, schools, etc.), I actually offer 3 different lengths of fun shows -- 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 60 minutes. I still have some shows that are a set length, like some of my educational shows for schools, or my big fundraiser show for schools. But most of the time, the customer has a few options to choose from.
Back in the 1980s and 90s, when I was performing earlier in my career, I offered many customers 2 show options -- 30 or 45 minutes. I might have only offered daycares / preschools 1 option back then. I know for sure that for birthday customers, it was only 1 option -- 30 minutes plus some balloon twisting. Then someone convinced me of the value in also offering a second / longer birthday option. And I've grown my options since then. - Donald
