I love those moments during a family show when 2 adults look at each other in shock after some magical moment. I'm not talking about a routine or even an effect. Rather, one small moment that catches the adults off guard and their facial expressions suggest they're thinking, "What the h*ll? How did he DO THAT?" I'd love to hear about those moments from your show!
I'll start: I open with a vanish of a small silk using a FT (not a TT). I tell the audience I'm about to make it change color to "test the magic in the air." When the silk vanishes with me in short sleeves and with such natural movements, the adults just stare at their friends/husbands/wives in silence, or they whisper "I don't understand. Where is it!!?" It's almost as if they came to watch "kiddie magic" and are stunned right away. Your turn! Describe a moment or two from your show that stop the adults "dead in their tracks" and cause them to stare at each other with dropped jaws |

I have a ring and rope routine that is the story of my little dog Ringo who would never stay on his leash. After we get through the initial bad jokes, the adults are prepared to be bored. But the first time the ring comes off, I've have adults jump out of their seats.

Another vote for Ring and Rope.
My Book Test. If the Kids are mostly younger I don't do a book test but for families with lots of teens and tweens it is great. NewsFlash 2.0 !! 20th century Silk (done with a Ha*c Ba**.) The disappearance of the silk is the part that gets the gasps. No kidding, Ninja Rings, and maybe especially from those in the know. I do larger Rings for bigger crowds but for an intimate Family group I find Ninjas stronger than any larger version I do. I don't consider a Family show fully successful if I don't get a couple of Adult reactions per show. A good Adult laugh is also something to go for. -Mary Mowder |

Like Frankie, I also get wonderful responses from adults by vanishing a silk, which re-appears inside an object that was chosen by, and held by a spectator, prior to the vanish.
Also, in my preschool dental program, I use a lot of colorful props and a fantastic shark puppet. But the one trick that gets the adults shaking their heads is when I perform Gypsy Thread trick with dental floss. Great reaction! Another "moment of astonishment" from adults is vanishing a mom or teacher's ring which they are convinced they are holding, imagining it traveling invisibly across the room, and landing in the innermost box of a nest of boxes. |

Hi Mary!!!! Where do you toss the h*nk b*ll for your silk routine? I was using a silk to cane for the end. I can't find any good plastic appearing canes anymore.

I have a shelf just below the top of my table.
I look for the wand on top of the table and noticing it is below on the shelf, I get it there (while ditching the ba**). -Mary |

I thought of another moment. I try to include the Mismade Bill in every show, regardless of audience size. The adults' faces are hilarious after the standard TT switch of the bill (as I'm displaying the mixed up bill), but the moment I love is the look of shock on their faces when I show my hands "empty." Those who assumed I switched the bill are stunned where there's nothing else in my hand!

Awesome. I have no doubt.
Does someone from the audience always loan you a ring? I find people so hesitant. Understandably so. |

You can bring a backup ring and give it to the hostess/host to give to you, just in case someone does not offer a ring. Remember to retrieve it.

Gypsy Thread trick I close almost every show with the Gypsy Balloon. In some places, I can't use a latex balloon, so I figured out how to use a foil Smiley Face. Very nice responses. Ed |

Stati-kid. I have had adults come up to me on many occasions and tell me they can't wait to go home and try rubbing a balloon on their face so they can stick spoons to it...and they are dead serious!
Pizza Oven. I have been performing this gem for 13 years and I always have adults rolling their eyes at the "cheesy" magic trick. I milk the cheesiness for as long as I can working the crowd into a frenzy. Then comes the reveal and the very same adults who were rolling their eyes stare at me with jaws wide open then, like Frank said, turn to their spouse and ask, "How the heck did he do that?" |
