For those of you who want to design something but aren't always sure how to go about it...
I just did a post on my blog about "thumbnail sketches," which are very quick drawings made during the design process, and used by architects, engineers, and others. My post was geared towards designing a theatrical set, but the technique is the same. In fact, I used it for the pieces I built for Joe Stevens last year. If you're interested, you can check it out at https://setdesignandtech.wordpress.com

Good article, George. This is something I do all the time. Everything begins with a concept and those are first given physical life with quick sketches. I guess I never knew it had a real name. Ha!

Ditto. In the initial stages I find speed is my friend. As soon as I move to 3D or a build, the pace just dies (and I model very fast in 3D) and it kills the creative process. Quick little messy drawings are perfect for getting the ideas right before you try to make them 'a thing'.

I did a lot of these sketches when I built homes. Often to explain something to a client or subcontractor. Drawing quickly became one of my best tools to communicate. I do kind of a mix of that in the magic shop. When things are smaller it helps to start with boundaries and then rough in the details within a scaled perameter. So say if I was building an 8" x 8" box I start with a square to scale then start roughing out the design with a straight edge. Most of the time I draw in 2D. Kind of somewhere between thumbnail sketch and shop plan.

I have always thought of drawing as a basic form of communication that can easily get an idea across beyond the spoken or written word.
Such a shame that our public schools have taken art out of the classrooms... |

Story boards with thumb-nail sketches are a good way to capture ideas and sequence for a new routine.
